Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor. Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools and motorized equipment. Applicants must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid New York State Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Applicants must submit their operator's license number on their application form for a motor vehicle check.
Preferred Qualifications: High School/GED. Two or more years’ experience working for a nursery, garden center or landscape crew. CDL License.

Brief Description of Duties: The Grounds Worker will provide grounds maintenance for West Campus.
  • Maintain Campus landscape by mowing, watering, edging, hand trimming, fertilizing and using weed control methods. Operate power mowers and other power tools. Understand and follow instructions. Perform physical tasks required of the position. Such tasks require bending, stooping, medium to heavy physical labor for extended time periods. Work outside in all types of weather.
  • Clean grounds by sweeping, raking, shoveling and removing by hand; debris, leaves, papers, branches.
  • Weed flower beds, around shrubs and trees as directed.
  • Load and unload trucks of supplies, debris, logs, dirt, etc.
  • Prepare flower beds for planting.
  • Remove snow and ice from walkways by shoveling and using snow removal equipment.
  • Utilize hand and power tools and machinery as needed.

Other Duties: As assigned.

Special Notes: This is a full time position, 40 hours per week, Wednesday to Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Seniority for promotion is the length of service in Operational Services bargaining unit.  Seniority applies only to those who meet the posted qualifications/job requirements for vacant noncompetitive class positions in salary grades higher than the applicants grade.
