Required Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED. Medical Assistant Program graduate. Three years of full time experience directly related to medical services. Prior work experience in an ambulatory setting scheduling appointments, along with excellent organization and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Associate Degree. Certified Medical Assistant. Familiarity with IDX scheduling, IDX rad, PowerChart and experience with Electronic Medical records. Familiarity with patient insurance forms and experience obtaining pre-certifications for insurance coverage.

Brief Description of Duties: The Patient Care Specialist will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Assisting in clinical duties as specified by physicians, RN's. NP's, Nurse Manager or Nurse Educator.
  • Answer phones, take messages and route appropriately (patient questions, medication refills, etc). Page physicians or NPs with emergency information obtained from patients,
  • Prep patients for physicians including taking vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature and weight, check for allergies and document all information. Update and record current, changed or discontinued medications and perform ECGs when necessary. Ensure patients have all prescriptions for tests, lab work and medications at completion of their clinic visit.
  • Assist with the maintenance of patient charts, updating charts for patient appointments, (consults, recent blood work, biopsies and inpatient records; place in chart prior to office visit appointments) filing and retrieving charts.

Special Notes: This is a full time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. *This position is located at Tech Park, East Setauket, NY. Night and weekend work is required. Travel to provide coverage at other clinical sites in the Department of Medicine will be required for this position.
