Required Qualifications: Graduate of accredited Surgical Tech program or military training. Two years OR experience.
Preferred Qualifications: CST certified. Work experience to include advanced surgical procedures.

Brief Description of Duties:
  • Assists the registered professional nurse with the preoperative preparation of the patient for assigned surgical procedures including prepping and positioning the patient.
  • Assembles equipment, supplies, sutures and instruments for each assigned surgical procedure.
  • Scrubs on the basic level procedures for all specialty services and on complex surgical procedures in the area of permanent specialty assignment, ensuring maintenance of the sterile field.
  • Assists in cleaning, restocking and reconfiguring the operating room between procedures and at the completion of the schedules.
  • Tests operational efficiency of equipment and reports problems to the OR Clinician or Assistant Director of Nursing.
  • When necessary, sterilize instruments prior to use.
  • Assists in restocking storage and equipment supply areas.
  • Transport patients from patient care units to the OR and vice versa.
  • Under direction of the registered nurse, performs delegated patient care activities in the Ambulatory Surgery Pre-Post Operative units.
  • Attends OR conference and in-service programs.
  • Makes suggestions to improve job performance and enhance patient care.
  • Precepts nursing students and orientees when assigned to the scrub role in area of specialization and as appropriate.

Special Notes: Shift: Full-time flexible position. Please note Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke free environment. All Hospital positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary. This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.
