Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Must have taken and passed the required Plant Utilities Engineer I state Civil Service exam and be reachable on the appropriate current Civil Service list. Ability to climb, stoop and do moderate to heavy lifting. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Applicants must submit their operator's license number on their application form for a motor vehicle check.
Preferred Qualifications:

Brief Description of Duties: The Plant Utilities Engineer operates, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, tests, and calibrates the mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, hot water, ventilation, air-conditioning and electrical distribution in the most efficient and safe manner possible.
  • Assigned to the HVAC zone which includes trouble shooting, maintaining and repairing all heating and A/C equipment by using the necessary tool(s) to remove obsolete and damaged equipment and replace it with new equipment (i.e. pneumatic controls, pressure valves, gauges and large pieces of equipment such as heat/hot water generators and other related items).
  • Perform preventative maintenance to equipment assuring that work is properly completed, doing the more difficult tasks personally.
  • Respond to calls concerning mechanical, electrical, or plumbing breakdowns to troubleshoot the problem and make necessary repairs if possible.
  • When necessary, supervise employees by assigning work and giving specific/technical direction when required. Plan and schedule daily work or in advance for completion by subordinates. Assure that employees carry out duties in a safe manner and properly use tools as required.
  • Assist others in the repair and/or removal for repair of major HVAC equipment.
  • Order materials for repair to HVAC systems by filling out requisitions or submitting lists in a timely manner.

Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. FLSA non-exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
