Required Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Minimum of two years full time clerical experience working with medical records (patient charts) and confirming patient appointments. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working in a busy multi-physician outpatient Gastroenterology clinic obtaining referrals, pre-certifications and/or authorizations from insurance companies. Familiarity with transcription and medical terminology. IDX experience.

Brief Description of Duties: The Clerk II will report to the Nurse Manager and must have a professional friendly phone manner, excellent customer services skills and strict attention to detail, responsible for the following duties:
  • Answer heavy volume of telephone calls from patients and other medical offices. This duty encompasses scheduling and confirming patient appointments and procedures as well as confirming patient insurance information, taking accurate messages for physicians and nurse practitioners and returning phone mail messages promptly.
  • Pull and file medical records and medical record charts.
  • Ensure physicians' outpatient schedules are full at all times; call new consults, wait lists and schedule patients appropriately.
  • Prepare patient charts for new, follow-up and procedure appointments.
  • Download and attach dictations to charts for physician review and signature. Make corrections to dictations on Microsoft Office Word.
  • Front desk coverage including checking patients in and out, collecting co-payments and referrals, and cover co-workers duties as required.
  • Obtain insurance referrals/authorizations/pre-certifications as necessary.

Special Notes: This is a full time position, 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. *This position is located at Tech Park, East Setauket, NY.
