Required Qualifications: High School Graduate/GED. Two years of full time, clerical experience, with one of those years having recently worked in a medical billing/physician office setting. Good customer service skills. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Applicants must submit their operator's license number on their application form for a motor vehicle check. Detailed oriented and organized. Knowledge of insurance policies and reimbursement.
Preferred Qualifications: Computerized billing experience.

Brief Description of Duties: The Clerk will serve as an On-Site Billing Representative assigned to process billing for a clinical department.
  • Patient interaction, which includes meeting and greeting patients, discussing insurance coverage and setting up budget plans.
  • Accept payments from patients, issue receipts and enter into system.
  • Handle phone calls and explanation of benefits, determine best way to resolve issues in the quickest possible manner, take appropriate action such as researching discrepancies, obtaining additional information, contact third party, etc. to resolve account problems.
  • Interact with Clinical Practice Management Plan (CPMP), physicians, practice managers and administrative staff regarding billing and other related issues.
  • Interact appropriately with third party representatives regarding policies.
  • Troubleshoot special projects related to coverage, carrier, etc., as needed.
  • Register patients on the IDX system.
  • Register patients on the SMS system.

Other Duties: As assigned.

Special Notes: These are full time positions, 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Some nights and weekends may be required, must be able to work varying time shifts each week. Travel will be required for this position. *This position is located at Tech Park, East Setauket, NY.
