Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Educational Technology, Web Graphic Design or related fields. In lieu of degree, four years of directly related full time experience, or a combination of higher education/appropriate professional certifications and experience totaling four years may be considered. Three years of experience with standards-compliant X/HTML, XML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript (including frameworks such as jQuery). Ability to translate Photoshop/Fireworks mockups into HTML templates. Advanced CMS experience, including command of CMS capabilities such as custom post types, multiple content blocks, and taxonomies; highly-customized theme production and implementation; and knowledge of latest WP plugins, trends, security issues, and best practices. Thorough understanding of cross platform/browser issues and a commitment to accessibility. Knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) best practices. Good written and verbal communication skills. Self-starter with ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with and interest in emerging technologies including HTML5. Familiarity with Dreamweaver. Prior experience with OmniUpdate SMS. Experience with JavaScript/JQuery and cascading style sheets (CSS). Customer service experience via telephone, email and in-person assistance to customers. Experience providing customer training in a classroom/lab setting.

Brief Description of Duties: The Front End Web Developer will work under the supervision of the Director of University Web Content. The incumbent, will work closely with the Web Production Coordinator and the rest of the web content team to facilitate the implementation and support of Stony Brook University's online presence. S/he will implement Stony Brook website design, build and evaluate websites using OU Campus (OmniUpdate) and support the development of online applications and dynamic web pages. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following:
  • Code, implement and customize online applications, JavaScript and interactive forms, including but not limited to, dynamic pages, mobile-friendly web pages, and sideshows.
  • Build templates and implement features of third-party applications including OmniUpdate CMS (content management system), WordPress and Active Data Calendar.
  • Implement Stony Brook University web design within brand and style parameters set by the communications team of the External Relations office.
  • Translate visual design, wireframes and prototypes and interaction concepts into functional HTML pages while ensuring high page speed, search engine optimization (SEO) and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Build and evaluate engaging, intuitive and user friendly websites using OU Campus (OmniUpdate).
  • Provide support for Stony Brook’s CMS by offering training sessions and in-person consultation, creating and maintaining online FAQs and tutorials.
  • Other duties as required.

Special Notes: This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
