Required Qualifications: Master's Degree and five years of full time experience in alumni/constituent relations and/or customer service, preferably in higher education/alumni relations. In lieu of Master's degree, a Bachelor's degree and 7 years of full time experience in alumni/constituent relations and/or customer service, preferably in higher education/alumni relations. Experience working with volunteers and diverse groups of individuals. Exceptional interpersonal skills, including excellent written, verbal and presentation skills. Ability to handle confidential information and communicate with tact and professionalism at all times. Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while working in a fast-paced environment. Ability to meet deadlines. Excellent attention to detail. Ability to interact with others with tact and diplomacy (including volunteers). Ability to develop action plans and budgets and keep expenditures within approved budgets. Ability and willingness to travel regionally (often) and out-of-state (occasionally), including evening and weekend hours.

Brief Description of Duties: Under the direction of the Executive Director of Alumni Relations, the Associate Director leads efforts to develop and strengthen lifelong relationships between alumni and the University and the Stony Brook Alumni Association. The incumbent will serve as second in command and is responsible for directing and managing the development and implementation of robust and innovative University wide alumni relations programs and activities in cooperation with other Advancement staff, Association volunteers and academic leaders. The Associate Director serves as staff liaison to assigned Association committees, as well as serves to assigned college/school administrators and represents the Executive Director when needed. This position provides leadership and direction for day to day organization of work, develops outreach strategies and implementation of techniques and assists in the management of general administrative functioning of the Office of Alumni Relations. Furthermore, the incumbent works closely with the Executive Director to develop action plans, operation strategy among, and requisite budget resources to achieve agreed upon goals and objectives. The selected candidate will:
  • Liaison with all Deans and Faculty of the University's thirteen colleges and schools, as well as their respective Development Liaisons and volunteer boards (where applicable) to conceptualize, develop, and implement innovative alumni programs and activities with the goal of strengthening alumni affinity towards their college, school, and/or department, as well as the University, in general. This includes working with academic leadership to better engage alumni in the intellectual life of the University and increase faculty involvement with alumni relations. This also includes multi-cultural alumni programming.
  • Leads in developing and implementing a consistent University reunion tradition including WolfStock Homecoming with the goal of strengthening the pride and affinity of alumni with the University and each other.
  • Work with the Executive Director to manage the planning, development and implementation of annual action plans for each prioritized alumni segment, maintain and improve departmental procedures, supervise student employee(s) and team training.
  • Collaborate with other Advancement staff to coordinate the resources and strategy necessary to facilitate integrated staff support for data collection (and research), tailored communications, event management, program delivery, volunteer opportunities, and increased giving in support of the University, college/school, and/or department, as appropriate to the constituency group.
  • Serve as department representative on the Communications and Data Strategy Team. Manages the development and implementation of digital marketing/communication strategies and collateral materials including managing web content and social media to better engage alumni constituents.
  • Provide staff support to the Alumni Association Board of Directors and its committees as assigned, including but not limited to, the Homecoming and Reunion Committee, Marketing, Alumni Interest Groups (AIGs) and Chapters, among others.
  • Participate in alumni board meetings and events regionally, nationally and internationally as needed. Additional duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Work with the Executive Director to plan and implement appropriate leadership development and training programs for alumni volunteers.
  • Facilitates and promote alumni benefits program including royalty affinity partnerships, as assigned.

Special Notes: This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Night and weekend work is required. Travel to attend and participate in Alumni and Advancement events, both off-campus and on-campus will be required for this position.
