Required Qualifications: Master's Degree in nursing or completion of a course for Nurse Practitioner and a certification as a Nurse Practitioner in Adult Health.  One year of full time working experience in Neurology/Neurosurgery/Strove experience or ICU Nursing experience. Proficiency with Microsoft Office.  Exhibit computer literacy required to navigate electronic medical record.  Nurse Practitioner certification.
Preferred Qualifications: Five years or greater experience in critical care. Previous NP experience. Knowledge of SBU policies and procedures. Knowledge of CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) and Department of Health Initiatives.

Brief Description of Duties: The Nurse Practitioner will enhance the continuity of care for our stroke patients.  This position requires the Nurse Practitioner to work 50% inpatient and 50% outpatient. The selected candidate will be responsible for:
  • Clinical responsibilities: Assess the health status of stroke patients by eliciting and recording detailed health and medical histories. Perform physical examination; order appropriate diagnostic test. Identify abnormalities from written reports requiring approved theraputic corrective actions. Collaborate with the inpatient stroke team as needed to ensure timely follow up appointments and thorough transfer of care.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate and modify treatment plans in consultation with the collaborating physician.
  • Collaborate with the stroke team, cerebrovascular team, ED and ICU to ensure compliance with NYS Department of Health, Joint Commission, and American Heart Association "Get with the Guidelines" Core and Quality Measures. Perform/complete core measures required in the outpatient setting such as modified-ranking scale score.
  • Develop, conduct and evaluate formal and/or informal continuing education, act as a resource and consultant to health care staff, participate in Nursing, Medical and Administrative committees that contribute to the development and revision of nursing standards of care.
  • Participate in research studies related to stroke care and treatment by contributing ideas, collecting data, sharing knowledge and applying new findings to practice.
  • Maintain and enhance a current level of knowledge relative to professional practice, as well as, continuing education requirements necessary for licensure and certification. Attend educational conferences.
  • Participate in the development and review of outcome data to measure the quality of patient care.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Neurology service and Associate Director of Nursing.

Special Notes: This is a full time position. The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
