Required Qualifications: Must have taken and passed the specific job related Civil Service exam and be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list.
Preferred Qualifications: One full year clerical (in a health care setting), secretarial (in a health care setting), or patient care experience. Only health care experience will be considered qualifying. Strong customer service skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
Brief Description of Duties: Nursing Station Clerk I: Assigned to either inpatient or outpatient units where there is daily contact with patients. In this capacity, you would screen communications by providing relevant information to appropriate personnel, give information on patient condition within existing policies, and direct visitors to the appropriate locations. You would also process physicians' orders by recording written orders in charts, kardex, flag sheets, or directly into a computer file after review by a Registered Nurse; and by filling out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions. In addition, you would make emergency calls, receive new admissions, prepare and maintain patient charts, maintain a daily log and clinic log, and perform miscellaneous clerical duties as required. You might also be required to pick up and deliver supplies and records for your unit, and may arrange ancillary appointments and patient transport. Nursing Station Clerk 1's are generally required to work holidays; weekends; and day, evening, and night shifts on a rotating basis.
Other Duties: As assigned. Transcribe AtStaff information/sick calls, time changes as indicated. Complete staffing reports and other assigned reports. Facilitate Nursing Office communication i.e. taking telephone messages in a courteous manner. Greet visitors in a professional manner. Maintain sick call log. Call staff at ADN
request. Maintains files at the request of the ADN's. Maintains books such as agency , per diem sign in. Check mail each day and deliver appropriately.
Special Notes: Shift: 1 full-time day position - 8:00 am - 4:30 pm - days vary. Please note Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke free environment.
Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements: Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services (The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination), submit (3) written references, and provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s). *Acute Care is defined as medical services provided for illnesses that are short-term (usually less than 30 days), intense, and have a relatively severe to very severe course, requiring knowledge and expertise in the vigilant monitoring of subtle changes in the patient's condition, as well as ability to quickly recognize and identify potential problems and conditions resulting from a previous disease.
