Required Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Education. In lieu of degree, four years of directly related full time experience, or a combination of higher education and experience totaling four years will be considered. Must have at least one season camp administrative experience on camping fields or equivalent outdoor living learning experience. Must have prior experience upholding DoH regulations. Must have experience using computer applications (e.g., MS Word, Excel, Email). Must be able to communicate effectively with campers, parents, staff, Camp Director, and PEP Staff.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in residential environmental camp projects more than one season. Applicants possessing a valid NYS driving license, Lifeguarding, EMT, Fishing License for NYS Freshwater fishing and similar certifications are preferred. Experience in outdoor pursuits in areas such as hiking, canoeing, backpacking, fishing, water safety and archery.

Brief Description of Duties: The Assistant Director for Environmental Education Camp Seawolf program, in the Professional Education Program’s Outreach unit, will assist the Program Administrator/Supervisor to work collaboratively with the camp director to assign and operate an environmental stewardship residential camp program and help ensure that it is run effectively. The incumbent encourages personal and social development of campers, observes campers and reports all accidents, significant illnesses, and/or signs of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse to the Camp Director. Participates in pre/after care as needed and maintains the confidentiality of the participants’ records.
  • Assist the camp director in offering an orientation program to all new campers arriving on Sunday of each of the three weeks of the camp operation. Will work with the Camp Director in assigning staff activities and other responsibilities to appropriate programs. Will work with the Camp Director to schedule and assign staff and campers to groups. Will assist the camp director in carrying out the management plan to ensure camper’s safety, abiding by Suffolk County Department of Health (DoH) regulations.
  • Will be responsible to recognize and appropriately respond to hazards and carry out emergency procedures, i.e. lost camper, lost swimmer, evacuation, fire safety drills, including but not limited to responding to any kind of emergency procedures.
  • Attend open houses for the Environmental Summer Camp and deliver program details to campers and their families. Assist the Camp Director to implement and/or plan programs to reflect camp goals and report to supervisor.
  • Participate in coordinating camp registration, prepare information needed for the annual report of the camp operation including inventories, staff and camper evaluation reports, camper registration data including those who received scholarships, and deliver them to Program Administrator/Supervisor and assist in finalizing the report for submission to the sponsor. Maintain and review records and evaluations of all programs, operations, staff and facilities and submit to Program Administrator/Supervisor for review.
  • Attend training and orientation for camp, assist in screening of application forms, and maintain supplies and equipment for camp, inventory, database of campers and camp staff for future reference.


Special Notes: This is a temporary, part time position expected to last until January 31, 2010. The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
