A Brief History: In 1956, SUNY established the State University College on Long Island (SUCOLI) at the Planting Fields Estate in Oyster Bay, Nassau County. Three years later the NYS Board of Regents and Governor Rockefeller established our mandate as a comprehensive University center to “stand as the finest in the country”. The campus moved to its present location at Stony Brook in 1962. Today: Stony Brook University Campus comprises more than 125 buildings on 1,100 acres. Our diverse Centers for Excellence, renowned medical center, theaters, museums, outstanding student residential and athletics facilities serve more than 22,000 students. SBU now includes locations at Manhattan and Southampton. New York State and the Research Foundation of SUNY are the two major employers of the more than 10,000 employees on the main campus.
