526.01 Emergency Closings

By law the Governor of New York is the only official authorized to close the University.

In the event of an emergency the Office of the President will announce cancellation of classes and changes to work schedules for employees in positions that are non-essential to the critical operations of the University and its Hospital.

Weather Emergencies
In case of severe snow or other weather emergencies the status of University cancellations and pertinent information is maintained on the University home page.

Information is also furnished to the following public media outlets: News 12 Long Island, WUSB 90.1 FM, WALK 97.5 FM, WBLI 106.1 FM, WBAB 102.3 FM, WINS1010 AM, WKJY 98.3 FM, WHLI 1100 AM, WRCN 103.9 FM, and WCBS 880 AM.

Stony Brook University Cable Channel 8 SBU Educational Programs / Emergency Management is an additional resource for students to remain advised of cancellations.

When classes are cancelled, University offices generally remain open and employees are expected to report to work. Employees who choose not to report to work because of weather conditions must charge absences to appropriate accruals with supervisory approval.

Individual departments are urged to develop communication procedures for weather emergencies (e.g. create phone chains; contact supervisors for information).

In the case of rapidly deteriorating weather conditions during the workday employees who leave early must secure supervisory approval and charge this time to appropriate accruals.

632-SNOW and 444-SNOW phone numbers are generally used to inform public vendors and other non-University personnel about the status of the University. Faculty, staff, and students should monitor the University home page for the most accurate and timely information.
