Stony Brook University Medical Center offers the public, including faculty and staff, an increasing variety of diagnostic and treatment services. Opened in February 1980, the hospital is the principal teaching facility for the Health Sciences Center and is rapidly becoming a referral center for patients from all of Long Island. All patients are fully responsible for the bills they incur, but financial assistance is available for qualified applicants. Department of Family Medicine: The hospital complex includes outpatient facilities in which the faculty of the School of Medicine practice in a setting very much like a large private physician’s office. A family practice center offers general health care with a full range of specialists. Patients are seen by appointment only, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m The Dental Care Center located in Sullivan Hall on South Campus, is the primary location for the clinical training of students in the School of Dental Medicine. As part of their education, the dental students, under faculty supervision, provide a range of services to members of the public on a fee-for-service basis. Prospective patients have access to the clinical program through a screening examination process. Interested individuals should call the Dental Care Center. An appointment will be made for a preliminary examination with radiographs if necessary. At that time, the eligibility of patient for participation in the program will be determined. This eligibility is based upon the dental needs of the patient as well as the educational requirements of dental students. The Dental Care Center operates Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with limited hours during the summer.
