The formal academic work-year extends from the first day of class in the Fall through commencement in the Spring. However, academic responsibilities begin before the start of classes and continue until after commencement.

Departments have a responsibility to participate in activities connected with th arrival of international students and final registration during the two week period prior to the first day of classes each semester. Some faculty members are assigned as a part of their departmental service to represent their departments in these activities. Faculty members must take into account the dates on which their final examinations are scheduled and their grades due when making plans for inter-session and summer periods. Teaching obligations are not concluded until final grades have been submitted to the department office for transmission to the Office of Records.
