802.00 Academic Freedom

SBU fosters, maintains and encourages full freedom within the law, for inquiry, teaching, and research. Faculty members discuss their own subject in the classroom without limitations; however, they may not claim as their right the privilege of discussing in their classroom controversial matter which has no relation to their subject.

The principle of academic freedom is accompanied by a corresponding principle of responsibility. Instructors and other employees have the obligation to indicate that they are not speaking for the institution in their personal, extra-mural statements.
