812.00 Faculty Rank

Academic Rank includes the titles Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Instructor, Librarian, Associate Librarian, Senior Assistant Librarian, and Assistant Librarian. Faculty in academic rank must be reviewed for continuing appointment (tenure) after periods of service.

Qualified Academic Rank refers to Faculty who are not subject to a mandatory tenure review. In the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Faculty with qualified academic rank generally hold the title Lecturer or a title of academic rank preceded by the designations “Visiting,” or “Research.” The Health Sciences Center also appoints Faculty to Qualified Academic Rank. These appointees generally have titles preceded by the designation "clinical".

Unsalaried Faculty are entitled to use SBU facilities, including the libraries, and participate in departmental and school governance to the extent determined by the school in which they are appointed.
