Stony Brook Opera 2008-2009 Concert Season "Music from the Roman and Neapolitan Baroque" Friday, February 13, 2009 8 pm, Recital Hall Join the Stony Brook Opera and Stony Brook Baroque Players for their collaboration. There is no admission charge for this performance, but donations at the door will be gratefully accepted, in support of early music and opera performance at Stony Brook. The first half of the program, conducted by Arthur Haas includes Alessandro Scarlatti's overture to the opera La caduta de' decemvir i (1697) and Durante's Concerto Grosso VIII "La Pazzia," on period instruments. The second half features stagings of two sacred works: Francesco Provenzale's Dialogo per la Passione (1686), and Giacomo Carissimi's Historia di Jephte. Provenzale’s work is in the Neapolitan operatic style, and includes arias and ensembles, some preceded by accompanied recitatives, the whole concluding with an extended madrigal chorus in the Roman style. The piece will be sung in the original Italian language. Carissimi's deeply moving oratorio, scored for 8 voices and a large continuo group, is in the theatrical style developed earlier in the century by Claudio Monteverdi, sung in the original Latin. These two sacred works will be staged by Jennifer Griesbach, with projected titles in English, and projected visual images designed by Jeanette Yew. David Lawton, Artistic Director of Stony Brook Opera, will conduct the cast and members of the Stony Brook Baroque Players.
