THE CORRECT DATE AND TIME FOR THE FINAL IS:
BIO 202 will be held M, W, F, 8:20-9:15 AM in Javits 100. BIO 202, with BIO 201 and BIO 203, make up a three-semester series on Principles of Biology. The three courses may be taken in any order. In BIO 202, living systems are treated from a molecular, cellular, and genetic point of view, with a focus on the relationship between structure and function. BIO 150 is a prerequisite for BIO 202; CHE 111, 121, 131, or 141 is a pre- or co-requisite. Satisfactory entry-level math proficiency is required. To add or drop the course, or to change lab sections, contact Ms. Darlene Prowse at Biology Learning Labs. LECTURERS: Prof. Vitaly Citovsky (VC), LSB 414, 2-9534
Office hours: Mondays and Thursdays, 10-11 AM Ellen Lopez, Lab Curator, 2-8543
REQUIRED MATERIALS: (Available in the University Bookstore) Textbook: Biology (5th Edition) by Campbell, Reese, & Mitchell Lab Manual: Molecules to Organisms: Laboratory Manual by J. Miyazaki Lab Notebook and other equipment: See BIO 202 Laboratory (Handout to be distributed during the first meeting.) Students with disabilities or special needs should contact Prof. Brown and Ms. Lopez early in the semester to discuss how their special needs can be accommodated in the lecture and the lab. EXAMINATIONS AND GRADES There will be three evening exams during the semester and a cumulative final exam during the finals week. The midterm exams are during the regular lecture hours, i.e. from 8:20 to 9:15 AM on Friday, September 29; Wednesday, October 25; and Wednesday, November 22. YOUR LOWEST GRADE ON THE FIRST THREE EXAMS WILL BE DROPPED. DO NOT BRING ELECTRONIC DEVICES SUCH AS PALM PILOTS, PAGERS, BEEPERS, OR RECEIVERS TO THE EXAM. IF YOU ARE CAUGHT CHEATING, YOU WILL RECEIVE AN F FOR THE COURSE AND BE REPORTED TO THE ACADEMIC JUDICIARY COMMITTEE. EXAM POLICY: NO MAKE-UP MIDTERM EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN IN BIO 202. If you miss any one of the first three exams, the missed exam will count as your dropped grade. If you miss any two of the first three exams and if you provide proper, acceptable documentation for missing each exam within one week of that exam, your grade will be calculated from the remaining midterm, lab, and final exam. If you miss two exams without proper documentation for BOTH exams, one of the zeros will count toward your final grade. FINAL GRADE CALCULATION (100% total): Two top grades from the first three exams (15% each); 30% Final cumulative exam; 40% Lab grade; 30% You lose 3 points (10% of total lab grade) for every unexcused absence from a lab HOW TO STUDY DO NOT MISS ANY LECTURES OR LABS. The lectures show you which topics to emphasize, how much detail you need to know, and how topics fit together. The exams are based on the lectures and the labs. Use the textbook and Study Partner CD (included with the book) to clarify and supplement material presented in the lectures. Chapters from the book listed in the Course Schedule help you to find relevant material for each lecture. In general, topics from the book not covered in the lecture will not be on exams unless a lecturer specifically assigns certain pages for study. However, lectures and labs may contain material not in the text, so DO NOT MISS LECTURES OR LABS. Remember that the lab grade will count for 30% of the final grade. Ask your lab TA to evaluate your performance in the lab periodically. SOURCES OF HELP - Recitation sections will be held throughout the week. The schedule is posted on the Course Bulletin Board. You will receive a maximum of 0.1% (out of 100% total for the course) for each week in which you attend a Recitation section. - Study Partner CD, inside the textbook, explains many concepts and clarifies material in the book. Some of this information is also available on the Web at awlonline.com/campbell. You can also access a Web site called “The Biology Place”, using the User ID and Password inside your textbook. - A number of old exams from BIO 152 (the previous version of this course) and last year BIO202 will be on the course Web page. - Student Study Guide for Campbell’s Biology by M. Taylor is in the bookstore - Lecturers will hold Office Hours from 10-11 AM Mondays and Thursdays - There will be a pre-exam review session before each exam. Lecturers will review material to be included on the exam and answer your questions. No new material will be presented. - For help with your lab work, lab TAs will be available at scheduled hours through the week. If you need additional help or have difficulty finding your lab TA, contact Ms. Lopez. NOTICE: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE FINAL EXAM DATE AND TIME HAS BEEN CHANGED. THE CORRECT DATE AND TIME: MONDAY, DEC. 18th, 8:00AM TO 10:30AM.

This is a final exam from last semester, which hopefully will be of some assistance in preparing for this year’s final. It might be helpful to take the exam as a pre-test and then check the key, which will be posted here next week. If you are not sure of the answers, look-up the information in your notes or textbook to help you work through the questions. Good luck.
