Calcium Imaging

Because larval zebrafish are transparent, labeled neurons can easily be viewed under fluorescence and confocal microscopes. Calcium Green Dextran (CGD) is a fluorescent, calcium sensitive dye which increases in fluorescence intensity with increases in cytosolic calcium concentration. Intracellular calcium concentration increases in electrically active neurons, so labeled neurons become brighter when they are active during a behavior. Using CGD, we can monitor the activities of labeled neurons in the intact fish during a behavior by literally watching which cells light up.
