Outreach

Goal
The India Outreach Pragram is an ongoing cooperative project of the India Studies Program Committee, the India Society at Stony Brook, Inc., Club India, and The Center for Excellence and Innovation in Education of the University at Stony Brook. The goal of the India Outreach program is to assist a wide range of institutions and individuals on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area in meeting their needs for authentic, balanced, and comprehensive information on India-related topics. The program draws upon the expertise of leading scientists, scholars, artists, writers and buisness persons at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and elsewhere to provide consultation on all aspects of traditional and contemporary India. These include the history, religions, languages, literatures, arts, educational systems, social structure, cultural traditions and family values, as well as issues of topical interest such as scientific and technological developments, international relations, economic and research opportunities, political trends, and environmental issues.
Audience
The India Outreach Program is designed to serve a broad range of groups who desire to inform themselves about Indian society and culture. These include:

  • Individual schools and colleges
  • School districts
  • Public libraries
  • Museums
  • Civic groups
  • Professional associations
  • The media
  • Publishers, independent film makers, multimedia material developers
  • Arts councils, cultural societies, and other community organizations and individuals
  • Health professionals, social workers
  • Business groups
    Activities
    The India Outreach Program assists in a wide range of activities, including:
  • Conducting workshops on the cultural, educational, and family systems of students from the Indian subontinent
  • Evaluating the language proficiency of students in area schools whose mother tougue is a language from the Indian subcontinent
  • Designing English as a Second Language programs for students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan
  • Developing library resources on the Indian subcontinent and the Indian American community in the United States.
  • Organizing workshops, seminars, discussion groups, and presentations on various aspects of traditional and contemporary Indian culture and society for educators, administrators, parent groups, college students, and community organizations
    Project personnel work with the sponsors to design and conduct programs that address the sponsor's specific goals and audience.
