Stony Brook--New York’s premier public research university--is home to internationally-recognized scholarship on the Americas, and in recent years the LACS Center has become our interdisciplinary base for deepening ties with the region. Stony Brook attracts growing numbers of Latino/a students from the New York metropolitan area and myriad Latin American-(ist) graduate students from across the disciplines--from Hispanic Languages and Mathematics to History and Sociology. The LACS mission goes beyond traditional “Area Studies”: it is to connect our diverse local interests around Latino and Latin American issues to dynamic global scholarship and developments across our Hemisphere. We make these connections through a growing range of activities. Each semester offers a diverse interdisciplinary Speakers series, a thematic Symposium and a fresh exhibition of recent Latin American arts. LACS offers a “Minor” in Latin American and Caribbean Studies which starts from an Introductory Seminar (LAC200) and ends with a range of working student Internships (LAC488) in the New York community. More than forty LACS-affiliated faculty participate in the Minor. LACS recently won a major “Rockefeller Foundation Residential Fellowship in the Humanities,” which starting in Fall 2003 will bring a total of eight Latin American post-doctoral fellows to research and write on the theme of “Durable Inequalities in Latin America: Histories, Societies and Cultures.” LACS hosts an annual Latin Americanist Graduate Student Conference and a Latin American film festival and has built a substantial lending collection of Latin American and Latino film on video. LACS works closely with the campus-wide Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations (held every October), supports Latino student organizations (such as LASO) and awards annual scholarships and graduate research prizes. LACS is developing innovative programming and outreach at Stony Brook Manhattan, including a joint “Stony Brook-Yale Colloquium on the Americas.” LACS leads the effort to create a SUNY-wide network of Latin American scholars and institutes. LACS is initiating academic exchange programs with major research institutions in Latin America--in Mexico, Peru and Argentina--and is a partner in APUNTES, an innovative Latin American social science journal. Each time you click our site, you should see some fresh new connections at LACS. The LACS offices are conveniently located on the north Third Floor of SBS (Social & Behavioral Sciences: see Campus Map). We maintain an attractive LACS Seminar Room & Gallery Space (SBS N320) where most events and exhibitions occur. You’ll find current Director (2000-2003) Eduardo Mendieta at N333 (ph: 631 632-7569 emendieta@notes.cc.sunysb.edu ); next door at N335 is full-time Administrative Assistant Doménica Tafuro (ph: 631-632- 7517/FAX 632-9432; lacc@notes.cc.sunysb.edu) along with graduate GAs and work-study students. You are also welcome to a comfortable study lounge stocked with current Latin American periodicals and class texts (N337) and a more specialized LACS research Library in N316. Drop by for the gallery, library or just to chat about your interests in LACS. This LACS Web site is updated on a semester basis.
