Both competitions are part of the broader “Partnership Fund for Latino Scholars and Research” and held in conjunction with university Hispanic Heritage Month (October). The first award is the “Undergraduate Award for Academic Achievement” which recognizes a Latino/a undergraduate of “outstanding academic achievement and service to the community.” The winner in the year 2000 was senior Ismenia Molina. The second award is the “Graduate Travel/Research Award.” It funds a graduate student from any discipline to “initiate dissertation projects related to the study of Latin America or the Caribbean.” The winner in 2000 was Brenda Elsey, a History student working on sport and gender in modern Chile. Winners are announced at the annual late-October Hispanic Heritage Month Awards Banquet.LACS will announce a new academic prize for “Best Student Paper in Latin American, Caribbean & Latino Studies” in Spring 2002. Sanchez Construction Corporation Scholarship Undergraduate Award for Academic Achievement Purpose: ![]() Purpose: This annual $1,000 award is to recognize an undergraduate student who has shown outstanding academic achievement, scholarly promise and service and leadership to the community. Eligibility: Latino/Latina juniors and 1st semester seniors in the College of Arts and Science with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA are eligible to apply. Award: $1,000 Procedure for applying:
