Hispanic Heritage Month Awards

LACS PRIZES AND FELLOWSHIPS

Hispanic Heritage MonthEach Fall Semester LACS sponsors and judges two university-wide fellowships for eligible students. Both competitions are part of the broader “Partnership Fund for Latino Scholars and Research” and held in conjunction with university Hispanic Heritage Month (October). The first award is the “Undergraduate Award for Academic Achievement” which recognizes a Latino/a undergraduate of “outstanding academic achievement and service to the community.” The winner in the year 2000 was senior Ismenia Molina. The second award is the “Graduate Travel/Research Award.” It funds a graduate student from any discipline to “initiate dissertation projects related to the study of Latin America or the Caribbean.” The winner in 2000 was Brenda Elsey, a History student working on sport and gender in modern Chile. Winners are announced at the annual late-October Hispanic Heritage Month Awards Banquet.

LACS will announce a new academic prize for “Best Student Paper in Latin American, Caribbean & Latino Studies” in Spring 2002.

LACS is currently raising funds to endow these fellowships. Contact us if you want information on how to participate or donate.

Below is this year’s formal Awards Announcements. These applications can be printed and submitted to our offices.
