LACC Library and Student Study Lounge

Day of the Dead-Dia De Los MuertosLACC currently maintains two growing library and resource centers, both adjacent to the Center Offices and Seminar Room on the Third Floor of SBS. The LACC Student Lounge is located at SBS N337 and is open for student use most weekdays, 9-5. Begun by a University “Diversity Grant” awarded to Professor Paul Gootenberg in 1995, the lounge offers comfortable facilities for student use, a range of current interdisciplinary journals about and from the region, as well as a library of commonly used class texts and other Spanish-language materials. Students and faculty are invited to use the lounge, which makes a fine setting for small meetings and seminars (up to eight persons). This is primarily a reference Library, though graduate students and faculty may sign out books or periodicals through our Administrative Assistant for up to seven days.

A second LACC Research Collection is located across the hall in SBS N316. This more specialized library is open to students and faculty only with the assistance of the Staff Assistant or Director. This valuable research collection contains approximately 1,500 scholarly items, which are now in the process of electronic cataloguing. The collection is especially strong in the areas of Latin American Political Economy, Politics and Labor issues (thanks to gifts from Professor Ian Roxborough). There are numerous Spanish and Portuguese monographs as well as full collections of a few Argentine and Brazilian periodicals and monograph series. There is a small but growing collection from “Stony Brook Scholars.”

The director’s office contains a Latin American/Caribbean Reference Library as well as the principle LACS FILM COLLECTION (see Sidebar for this collection and its lending policies). Please consult Stony Brook’s Latin American Collections for information on Melville Library’s substantial general resources in Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
