Samuel Baron Prize Winner Announced

(Stony Brook, NY) The Department of Music at Stony Brook University announces the 2007 winner of the Samuel Baron Prize: David Bowlin, violinist. The prize provides a $10,000 career advancement award to an exceptional young musician who embodies the qualities that defined Samuel Baron: musicianship, scholarship, humanity, generosity, intellectual curiosity as well as a profound love for music and a sense of joyousness in the pursuit of excellence.

David Bowlin received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 2007 from Stony Brook, studying violin with Ani Kavafian, Philip Setzer, and Pamela Frank. Mr. Bowlin has been described by Professor Kavafian as a “musician’s musician” for the “intelligence and individuality” he brings to his playing. And Professor Setzer deems Bowlin “one of best young violnists around.” Both Setzer and Kavafian note Bowlin’s ease in performing the challenging works of the standard violin repertoire as well as complex contemporary works. Another Stony Brook faculty member, Professor Christina Dahl remarks on “the depth of his musicianship and violin-playing as well as his obvious great gifts for contemporary music.”

Samuel Baron was a founding faculty member of the Department of Music and director of the Bach Aria Festival at Stony Brook from 1981-1987. Baron was also a founding member of the New York Woodwind Quintet, and in 1996 received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Flute Association.

Violinist David Bowlin is active as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher, and performs a wide repertory of works both old and new. He has been a prizewinner in national and international competitions, including first prize at the 2003 Washington International Competition for Strings. David has premiered dozens of solo and chamber music works, including the world premiere in Carnegie Hall of Mahagoni, a violin concerto written for him by Bulgarian composer Alexandra Hermentin-Karastoyanova. Recent recitals and concertos include performances across the United States, including New York, Washington, D.C., Maine, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Illinois.

He is a founding member of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), which has an active national and international touring schedule. He is also a former member of the acclaimed Da Capo Chamber Players, with whom he has toured extensively in the US and former Soviet Union. David was recently named artistic director of Chamber Music Quad-Cities, an organization that brings chamber music performances to the community in eastern Iowa and western Illinois where David is a native.

David has performed in most major concert venues in New York, including Weill Recital Hall, Zankel Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the 92nd St. Y, Merkin Concert Hall, Miller Theater, and Symphony Space. He has performed and recorded with Fred Sherry and other members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and with Musicians from Marlboro. Recording credits include works of Stravinsky, Webern, George Crumb, Chinary Ung, Richard Wernick, and Brian Fennelly, for the Bridge, Albany, and Naxos labels. Summer festivals include Marlboro, Kneisel Hall, Aspen, the New Hampshire Music Festival, Eastern Shore Chamber Music Festival, and the Weathersfield Music Festival.

In 2007 he joined the violin faculty of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music after serving as teaching assistant to Ronald Copes at Juilliard from 2002-2005. He has given master classes at major institutions including Stony Brook University, Cornell University, the North Carolina School for the Arts, and the Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia, Mexico. Principal teachers include Roland and Almita Vamos, Ronald Copes, Philip Setzer, Ani Kavafian, Pamela Frank, and Stephen and Kimberly Sims. He is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory, the Juilliard School, and Stony Brook University.
