Stony Brook offers a unique learning environment for advanced conductors, similar to an apprenticeship. Conductors direct accredited Stony Brook ensembles every semester, not pick-up groups or "lab" choruses. It is also possible to receive recital credit for conducting approved, off-campus choirs. Rehearsals and concerts are observed weekly, followed by private lessons. Lessons are flexible and can be tailored to student needs and interests. Topics can include performance practice, conducting recitative, diction, vocal production, rehearsal technique, chant transcription and interpretation, etc. Past students have conducted ballet with chorus, modern works with the Contemporary Chamber Players in Stony Brook and New York City, prepared and conducted editions of early Renaissance music, conducted performances with the Baroque Ensemble and opera workshop, conducted at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival. The graduate program in music at Stony Brook is more flexible and performance-oriented than most universities, and represents a cross between university and conservatory programs. We have a maximum of 2 graduate choral conducting students in residence at any one time. Please do not hesitate to call Dr. Mount at school (631-632-7329) or leave a message (631-632-7330) or at home (631-474-4043) with any questions. Thank you for your interest.
