Susan Deaver, Artist in Residence; Conductor of the University Orchestra D.M.A. Manhattan School of Music, 1994 E-mail Susan Deaver at: sedeav[at]earthlink.net Susan Deaver, conductor, is currently in her sixth year as Music Director and Conductor of the University Orchestra at Stony Brook University and will conduct the University Orchestra in a series of three orchestral concerts at Staller Center during the 2005-2006 season. A frequent clinician and guest conductor, she is well known on Long Island and is experienced in working with undergraduate and graduate college musicians focusing on performance and music education. Dr. Deaver is on the Music Faculty of Stony Brook University, C.W. Post Campus/Long Island University and Manhattan School of Music's Precollege Division. Her Bachelor's and Master's degrees are from Manhattan School of Music where she received her Doctorate in Musical Arts. Her doctoral thesis, entitled "The Group for Contemporary Music, 1962-1992," dealt with both the historical and performance aspect of one of America's foremost contemporary music ensembles. She was selected to participate in Tanglewood's Conducting Seminar Classes with Gustav Meier, the conducting seminars of the American Symphony Orchestral League, the Conductor's Guild and at Manhattan School of Music with Kurt Masur, Julius Rudel and Sixten Ehrling. As an orchestral fellowship student at Tanglewood in 1972, she worked with both Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. Her conducting repertoire both as a conductor and performer is extensive.In November 2000, she presented a series of "Orchestral Reading Sessions" for Long Island Music Educators at The Balanced Mind V Curriculum Conference and conducted Copland’s Appalachian Spring in the original ballet version for 13 instruments at Tilles Center for a series of Children?s and Family Concerts. For the past eleven years she has assisted Tilles Center in coordinating a residency with the New York Philharmonic that involved both the C.W. Post Orchestra and selected youth orchestras from Long Island in a series of sectionals, panel discussions and open rehearsals with members of the Philharmonic. She is currently the Music Director and Conductor of the C. W. Post Orchestra and the North Shore Symphony Orchestra. She was a conductor for the Manhattan School of Music's Contemporary Ensemble from l987 to l989. As a guest conductor, she has conducted the Washington Chamber Symphony, the Island Chamber Symphony, the Bronx Opera Chamber Orchestra, the Gemini Youth Orchestra, the C.W. Post Percussion Ensemble, The Seoul Symphony of New York, the Brooklyn Heights Orchestra and contemporary music at Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. In August 2000 she conducted in Seoul, Korea at the New International Music Festival at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and returned in May 2004 to guest conduct in Pusan, Korea. In working with younger musicians, Dr. Deaver is currently Long Island Youth Orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor and has conducted LIYO in performances in Scotland, England and Spain. She has assisted both the Long Island Youth Orchestra and the New York Youth Symphony in coordinating and coaching chamber music. She was selected to be the Guest Conductor of the 1989 Nassau All-County Junior High School Orchestra, the 1997 Sewanhaka All-District Festival and the 4th Annual Long Island High School Invitational Chamber Orchestra Festival at Tilles Center in 1997. As a flutist, she has performed with New York Virtuosi, Philharmonia Virtuosi, New York Scandia Symphony, Long Island Philharmonic, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Queens Symphony, the ballet orchestras of the Australian Ballet and the Royal Ballet, and on Broadway with the Phantom of the Opera and My Fair Lady. On numerous occasions she has performed as a flute soloist at the Kennedy Center with the Washington Chamber Symphony of which she was Principal Flute from l981 to 2002. As a chamber musician, she is the flutist with The Pierrot Consort and the Concordia Trio and she is the co-founder/co-director of The C.W. Post Chamber Music Festival.
