|  Graduate Audition Guidelines & Dates

Welcome Applicants to Stony Brook's Music Department. The website has been updated as of 8 January 2008.
Applicants in oboe, clarinet, and double bass: please note that Professors Taylor, Gilbert, and Carver will no longer be on faculty for Fall 08. New hires in oboe, clarinet, and double bass will be announced by April 2008.

All applications must be done online.
Applicants are urged to provide an accompanist. In the event that this is not possible, the Department will provide one if notified sufficiently in advance of the audition; applicants making such a request must list the works to be performed at the audition on the Audition Form.
The Music Department should receive all supporting application materials, including audition forms, no later than 15 January 2008.

Some studios require prescreening materials. Those are marked with an "*" below. Recordings must be sent by the dates indicated below.
General Instructions for Auditions:
DOCTORAL APPLICANTS -
See instructions below for repertoire requirements specific to each instrument or voice.
A recorded audition may be considered only in exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of the audition committee.
MASTERS APPLICANTS -
See instructions below for repertoire requirements specific to each instrument or voice.
Masters applicants who live more than 250 miles from New York City may submit a taped audition to their prospective teacher.
All auditions are at Stony Brook, unless otherwise indicated.
| Piano | 27-28 February 2008. All recordings must be of a live performance. Live auditions will be held in the Staller Center Recital Hall.
Both DMA and MM applicants will be expected to have prepared a full and representative program. |
| Harpsichord | 19 February 2008, Harpsichord Studio, Room 2315, Staller Center for the Arts. Send audition forms to Arthur Haas. Applicants are invited to sit in on Baroque Ensemble class which meets 10-1 on Tuesday mornings in Room 0111. |
| Violin* | 22 February 2008, Recital Hall, Staller Center for the Arts.
Preliminary Audition Recording (CD or tape) must be received from all applicants (MM and DMA) no later than 15 December 2007. (The recording should include 3 items from the live audition repertoire – applicant's choice.)
Pre-screening results will be communicated in an email no later than 15 January 2008.
Repertoire for Live Audition:
DMA: 1 movement of a concerto; 2 contrasting movements of solo Bach; one post-1945 work
MM: 1 movement of a concerto; 2 contrasting movements of solo Bach; sonata with piano or virtuoso piece |

| Bass | 28 February 2008. Bass Studio (Staller 3352)
MM: a representative sonata or concerto: or, two or three 1) contrasting movements from different pieces, 2) short works, or 3) orchestral solos.
DMA: one half-hour of diverse pieces of significant musical content, including at least one movement from a Bach Suite or Gamba Sonata (from a full recital). |
| Flute* and Oboe | 11 February 2008, starting at 10:30 am. Location: Staller 3350. Audition Requirements:
Flute:
Preliminary Audition Recording (CD or tape), not to exceed 15 minutes, must be received from all applicants (MM and DMA) no later than 15 December 2007.
Pre-Screening Recording must have accompaniment if the work is accompanied.
Repertoire for the Pre-Screening Recording:
1. The expositions of the first and second movement of either the Mozart G
Major or D Major Flute Concerto
2. Two different movements of two different works from two contrasting periods of the standard flute solo repertoire. (may include a concerto movement or solo sonata; selection must be with accompaniment if written with accompaniment)
3. Three standard orchestral excerpts , one of which must be Mendelssohn Midsummer's Night Dream Scherzo, including the 4 bar introduction and solo; other two of applicant's choice of contrasting styles.
Repertoire for the Master's or Doctoral Degree programs live audition:
1. An entire Mozart concerto of the applicant's choice (D or G Major)
2. Two complete and contrasting solo works for flute from different periods
3. Five standard contasting orchestral excerpts of applicant's choice, one
which must be the Mendelssohn Mendelssohn Midsummer's Night Dream Scherzo (with 4 bar introduction as well as the solo)
Oboe: a) A slow and fast movement from one sonata or concerto; b) a technical etude |
| Viola* | February 12 & 13, in the Viola Studio (Staller 2309)
DMA applicants please send a CD to the Graduate Coordinator for Music by
10 January 2008. (The CD should include 2- 3 samples of the audition repertory-- applicant's choice.) If applicant is not able to play a live audition, please submit both a videotape and a CD following repertoire requirements below.
Viola audition repertoire:
MM: 1) 2 contrasting movements of solo Bach 2) one movement of a standard
concerto 3) a movement of a sonata with piano or solo piece from the standard
repertoire.
DMA: 2 contrasting movements solo Bach (cello suites or violin sonatas /
partitas); 2 movements of a 20th Century concerto, such as Walton, Hindemith,
Bartok, Penderecki; a sonata with piano; a piece written after 1950. |
| Clarinet | 26 February, in the Clarinet Studio (Staller Center Room 2319). Repertoire Requirements: Applicants may choose to perform “traditional” repertoire, which would include, but not be limited to, a Mozart Concerto, Weber Concertos or Concertino, or Debussy Rhapsodie. If you have questions about repertoire, you can feel free to contact Daniel Gilbert at danielgilbert@ameritech.net. Clarinet auditions are expected to be performed without accompaniment. |

| Voice* | 23 February 2008, home of Elaine Bonazzi
All voice applicants (MM and DMA) must submit a 10-minute audio recording of them singing no later than 15 January 2008. This is to be sent directly to Ms. Bonazzi. (Elaine Bonazzi, 650 West End Avenue, Apt 3C, New York, New York 10025) No video recordings will be accepted.The repertoire for this recording should include two pieces: one (1) operatic aria and one (1) art song in any language.
IF you are invited to audition live, the audition will be 23 February 2008 . This audition will be 15 minutes long. You must sing at least one (1) operatic aria. You must sing in English, German, and French. You may choose between Italian and Spanish, but must sing one or the other. You may also choose to also sing in Russian, but this is not a requirement.
Applicants for admission to the MM program should have sung at least one solo recital.
After you sing your audition, there will be a brief interview, a sight-singing/theory test, and you will need to write a short essay in English. |
| Bassoon* | 29 February 2008. Auditions in Stony Brook from 9-1
Preliminary Audition Recording (CD or tape) must be received from all applicants (MM and DMA), by 15 December 2007. (The recording should include 3 samples of the audition repertory – applicant's choice.)
CD's and a 1-page resume should be sent to Frank Morelli (contact him at morbassoon@aol.com for the mailing address.)
MM Degree: Three complete, contrasting solo works: At least one must be a major concerto (e.g., Mozart, Weber, Hummel, Vivaldi). One work may be unaccompanied.
Four contrasting, standard orchestral excerpts.
DMA Degree:
1. At least one complete bassoon concerto from the following list: Mozart Concerto K191, Weber Concerto, Hummel Concerto, Jolivet Concerto
2. Three additional complete, contrasting works.
3. Be prepared to discuss (including, but not limited to): Each work's place in bassoon repertoire, the composer, performance practice, the edition used as compared to other editions of that work, etc.
4. At least eight contrasting, standard orchestral excerpts.
Piano accompaniment is recommended. Substitutions for the above requirements will be considered on a case by case basis. These substitutions must be reviewed by Frank Morelli. He welcomes any questions via e-mail: morbassoon@aol.com |
