Frequently Asked Questions
What are the ages of the Pre-College students?
Students enter the Pre-College Division when they have reached 9th grade or the equivalent. Students can stay in the program through their senior year in high school.
When does Pre-College meet?
Pre-College meets on Saturdays, from September through May, for approximately 28 weeks of instruction. All classes take place in the Music Building of the Staller Center, and in the Recital Hall. The day begins promptly at 10:00am and usually finishes by 2:00pm.
What types of instruments are accepted into the program?
All string instruments, wind instruments, percussion, voice and piano will be considered for acceptance. The jazz program can also accommodate drum set, guitar, keyboards and electric bass.
What classes are offered?
A typical schedule consists of a theory/composition section class and a performance section.
What is a typical day in the Pre-College program?
Students arrive promptly at 9:45am for a group and individual warmup. The first session is a 30 minute studio class grouped by instrument, followed by a 60 minute chamber class. All students then participate in a program-wide chorus with their instructors, followed by a short lunch break. In the afternoon, students are assigned to a 30 minute sight-singing/ear training class followed by a 60 minute music theory class. Placement in chamber groups and music theory is based on entrance auditions and placement exams on the first day of classes.
What is chamber music?
Chamber music combines the virtuosity of solo performance with the of a large ensemble. In a chamber ensemble, you perform your own part . String quartets are the most familiar type of chamber group, but any configuration is possible. Additionally chamber groups usually have no conductor and perform in more intimate venues. Stony Brook University is known in the international community as one of the leading chamber music training programs.
What classes are offered?
The core of the program is the chamber music coaching session. String, wind, piano performers are placed into age and level appropriate chamber groups. Percussionists and vocalists are placed into their own homogenous practice environments. Beginning students are required to take music theory; advanced students may elect to take jazz improvisation, advanced theory and composition. The Pre-College program is designed solely for training in classical or concert music as well as jazz improvisation.
What performance opportunities are available in the Pre-College Program?
There are two main concerts in January and June on which all chamber groups perform. A concerto competition in the Fall gives the opportunity for two winners to perform on the University Orchestra's annual Children's Concert. Other performances in local venues are also scheduled throughout the year. In addition, students admitted to the Pre-College program are automatically admitted into the Wind Ensemble, University Orchestra and Chorale. Discounted tickets to Music Department concerts and Staller Center events are also available.
How do I get admitted into the Pre-College program?

What should I play for my audition?
Two contrasting pieces, scales and sight reading are required elements of the audition.
