Comments from the Coaches

An Interview with Head Football Coach Sam Kornhauser following a preseason practice.

Coach what is your prospective on the team this season?

“We’re very excited about the upcoming season. We had a great season last year. We’re playing in a tremendous facility, the players worked extremely hard during the off-season to prepare themselves. Things are falling into place and confidence is good. As a coach teaching teamwork, camaraderie, skills, I see it all coming together.

An exciting player to watch this year is T.J. Moriarity. You’ll be surprised at his athletic ability, the strength of his arm and his leadership.
I’m very happy with the development of the offensive line. We have 4 returning starters from last year. Anytime you have 4 out of 5 starters back, you have experienced athletes that have worked together and they are more confident.

We’re going to be better. Defensively we have big, fast, kids. The defensive line will dominate the line of scrimmage. They are bigger, stronger and faster with experience under their belt. We need to replace Aden Smith who was the leading tackler in the conference for two straight years. Our secondary is intact and we have more depth. We lost a defensive lineman, an inside linebacker and one safety but we have others ready to step up. We have 15 of 21 starters back after last years 8-2 season. We have a solid kicking game.

In my 20 years at Stony Brook, I have never seen a defense as solid and an offense so explosive, and a kicking game that can score. If you come to our games, you will see a good solid college football team”.

Women’s Soccer

As the 2003 season approaches, Stony Brook women’s soccer hopes to continue its momentum from a remarkable 2002 season in which Stony Brook earned its first postseason berth as a member of the America East. This year, a team made up primarily of underclassmen now has only one hurdle left to climb – get back to the conference finals and win their first title.

Only two upperclassmen appear on the 2003 roster, making this one of the youngest teams in the program’s history. Juniors Brittany Norwood and Leanna Yust are veterans on a team that features 18 underclassmen. Norwood is a veteran that has proven herself to be among the elite players in the America East Conference. We are again looking for Norwood to use her speed and strength to anchor our team in the back. Cindy Bennett, the 2002 America East Rookie of the Year, is returning between the pipes for the Seawolves. Joining Bennett and Norwood in the back will be sophomore Katelyn Martin, Marissa Nucci and Chelsea VanHorn, a transfer from Ohio State.

SBU is heading into the season knowing that defense will again be its strength, yet will need to find the back of the net more often this season if it wants to get back to conference playoffs. Central players Leanna Yust and freshman Katie Kramer will direct the SB attack from the midfield. Newcomer Kendra Graber, will join Yust and Kramer in the midfield, along with Danielle Lewis. Rounding out the offense will be forward Joy Gueverra, Suzy Larson, Kizzy Seaton, and Jackie Anthony rotating in to create scoring opportunities for the Seawolves.

“We have been pleased with the growth and development of our team thus far” said coach Ryan. “Our sophomores are coming off an excellent season last year, and I believe the crucial aspect to this season for our young team is for them to continue not only to have an impact, but they also have to mature and play beyond their years. With only two upperclassmen, the sophomores will be the cornerstone of this year’s team.” The 2003 season is off to a solid start for the Seawolves after an exciting 2 – 1 win against Lehigh on September 17th.

Come out and support the Seawolves as we kick off our America East league play on Thursday, October 2 at 7:00 against Albany.
