It is a partner in a five National Laboratory – two university consortium to develop easy to use mesh and discretization tools as part of a major Department of Energy Computational Science initiative. We have a vigorous program for the analysis of numerical and modeling errors and their influence on simulation based predictions. These activities include extensive National Laboratory and industrial collaboration. A major new achievement in this area is a new approach to simulating type Ia supernova by Ph.D. student of Glimm’s, Srabastri Dutta. It is unique in not making any use of an internal turbulence model. This allows for better understanding of the dependence of the explosion on sensitive parameters such as initial flame location and its perturbation from a perfectly spherical shape. |
