There are currently sixteen graduate fellowship opportunities.

Graduate Job Opportunities
Prof Yuefan Deng anticipates openings of several graduate research positions. The students are expected to develop parallel computing programs for a new class of supercomputers (BlueGene/L and QCDOC) designed by IBM and Columbia University.

These programs are expected to tackle problems in simulating biotoxins by molecular dynamics. Although high-level programming languages such as C, High Performance FORTRAN, and MPI can handle most of the problems, one may expect to develop some portions of the applications in lower-level languages for higher efficiency. Therefore, the ideal candidates should have solid background and strong interests in computer science particularly in parallel computing in addition to basic training in applied mathematics and physics or chemistry or biology.

Successful applicants will be able to collaborate with researchers from BNL, IBM, and Columbia University as well as Prof Deng. These openings are only for Ph.D. candidates and this ad will be open until all positions are filled.

A Ph.D. student in Applied Mathematics is recruited to join a multidisciplinary research team to study the mathematical properties of glucose regulation in type 1 diabetes and to develop a mathematical model of glucose-insulin dynamics for Type-1 diabetes. The successful applicant will participate in model development, numerical simulation, and computational algorithm development, with a specific focus on the dependence of pancreatic islet function on its size. The student will enjoy opportunities to interface with researchers and colleagues in bioinformatics, human genetics, biostatistics, and mathematical biology. Participation in our other ongoing projects including genetic data mining is optional. Qualifications include a BS background in Mathematics, Physics, Mathematical Biology, and Bioinformatics, Biophysics or closely related areas, with strong quantitative research abilities.
