The students, faculty and staff in the AMS Department want to extend a warm welcome to you as a new student in our graduate program. You'll find the next few years to be some of the most wonderful, frustrating, fun, challenging, fulfilling and memorable years of your life. You'll have learning opportunities that extend beyond academics and research. You'll learn about different people, cultures, places and ideas. Some of this information will come from the orientation programs you attend as soon as you arrive on campus. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet and to start to get to know your fellow grad students, as well as our faculty and staff. You'll be working alongside these people for many years and knowing who to go to for information and support can be crucial to your future success. So, shake hands, clearly introduce yourself, ask questions, and most importantly, listen carefully to the information you receive. Remember that not all people on campus are native English speakers. Students, faculty & staff come from many different countries. Get used to saying your name slowly and clearly, spelling it out when necessary. Make sure you understand the name of the people you speak with, writing names down when needed. This is a time to try new things. Be open to new experiences, explore possibilities and expand your horizons. You will soon be involved in several different orientation programs (I & II ) that you are required to attend. The aim is to get you acclimated to the campus and the Applied Math Department, and to let you know what forms and procedures are necessary in order for you to start classes. (I) The Graduate School is holding an orientation on Wed., August 27, 2008. You will be receiving information from the Graduate School regarding that orientation, which includes information from the International Services Office. Please visit their web site at the following link: http://www.grad.sunysb.edu/prospective/orientation/index.shtml. (II) The 2 day, AMS departmental orientations are currently being planned and we'll let you know the times & dates shortly. The second day of the departmental orientation is for academic advising by the AMS faculty. Once the date is set, you'll need to report to Christine Rota, Graduate Coordinator, in the Math Tower Building, upstairs, on the first Floor, room 1-122 between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm to set up your advising appointment time. COURSE REGISTRATION: Once you have been advised by an AMS faculty advisor, you may register for classes via the SOLAR SYSTEM. MAILBOXES: You will be assigned a mailbox by the first day of class. These boxes are located on the Plaza level (the main level) of the Math/Physics Building. The mailboxes are in a locked room near the AMS dept. office and next to the open staircase. Please look for your name alphabetically. The student’s mailboxes start after the faculty and staff boxes. If you do NOT see your box, please let me know and I will have one established for you. Make sure that you check your mailbox at least once a week. COMPUTER ACCOUNTS: When you arrive for academic advising, we will provide a form for you to complete and return to Christine Rota, Grad. Coordinator. In about three to five business days after classes have started, check your department mailbox for a notice which will give you further instructions as to how to proceed with your computer/email account. All grad students must have an AMS e-mail account first initial of (first name, followed by last name)@AMS.SUNYSB.EDU. Please check your AMS account often for important information. PARKING PERMITS: If you have a car, you need to register your vehicle on campus and obtain a parking permit. You may apply for your parking permit on the Web at http://www.parking.sunysb.edu. You must be registered for classes before you apply for the parking permit. IDENTIFICATION CARDS: The campus card is a wallet-sized identification card, which can be used for identification, library services, and campus meal plan services. You need to go to the campus card office, located in the Administration Building Room 103, with a completed ID Card application and a picture ID. You must be registered for classes before you go for your I.D. card. The campus card office hours are: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 to 4:00 and Tuesday from 10:00 to 7:00. There is no fee for the first campus card, but there is a $25.00 fee to replace a lost card. We are delighted to have you join our department, so please don't hesitate to contact the AMS staff for assistance. WELCOME! |
