"Transnational Intimacies of Information and Communication Technology: Gender, Sexuality, and Nation in Indian Call Centers"
Globalization is pushing the boundaries of feminist technoscience. While scholars have documented the patriarchal foundations of technology, and the subversions of gender on the internet, the question still remains of how these dynamics play out under transnational relations. It can be argued that as information and communication technologies (ICTs) are globalized, gender will become increasingly structured and complicated by nation and race. As a case study of this process, an ethnographic analysis will be presented of Indian customer service call centers, where Indian women and men answer calls from U.S. consumers for U.S. firms, and where femininity and Americanness are both embedded in ICT work.

11. Agent Yellow (Christine Choy/2006/26 minutes)Thursday, February 23, 7pm, Wang Center Theater
Controversy, Science, Espionage! This film focuses on the ambiguous role forced upon Chinese scientists and engineers who have contributed significantly to American military research while still remaining largely invisible, except when singled out for disloyalty, as in the recent case of Wen Ho Lee, or the 1950's McCarthy Era case of Tsien Hsueh-sun. It explores pervasive American perception of China in either/or terms: either a sinister threat or a potential partner, and explores how these attitudes have led to a wariness about Chinese involvement in U.S. military technology.
Introduction to film by and Q and A with award-winning director Christine Choy and SBUs own Dr. Barry McCoy. Distinguished Professor, Physics Department

13. Shri 420 (Gentleman Cheat)(Raj Kapoor/1955/177 minutes/Hindi with English Subtitles) Wednesday, February 1, 7 pm, Wang Theater
Raju (Raj Kapoor) a small town orphan goes to the great metropolis of Bombay with grand dreams of making it. His ideals and principles are soon tested, compromised and eventually crushed by the harsh realities of the big bad city. He falls in love with Vidya (Nargis), a poor school teacher with a paralyzed father but is seduced by the worldly Maya (Nadira) and persuaded by a club owner who offers him a partnership in his under-handed dealings and numerous scams to cheat the gullible. Tightly constructed with brilliant music, the film can be compared to Chaplins Modern Times (1936), and is an indictment against crass materialism.

14. Kagaz Ke Phool (Paper Flowers) (Guru Dutt/1959/153 minutes/Hindi with English subtitles) Wednesday, February 8, 7 pm, Wang Theater
This film looks at the tawdry movie industry and the people within it who are like flowers of paper, beautiful to behold but artificial nevertheless and without fragrance. Guru Dutt plays the genius film maker Suresh who is shunned by his elitist wife, his daughter Pami (Baby Naaz) and family because his profession has no social status. He becomes successful on discovering the radiant Shanti (Waheeda Rehman). But is forced to leave her when Pami his daughter tries to reunite her parents. As Shantis star rises, Suresh is lost without her, and slides downhill in torment. This melancholic masterpiece is Indias first cinemascopic film that boasts of breathtaking cinematography and memorable scenes of wrenching melodrama.
