1. September 11 5 Year Commemoration Ceremony

The September 11, 2001 5-year commemoration ceremony to honor alumni and other members of the Stony Brook family who were lost, will be held Friday, September 8, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Alumni Memorial Arch located in the grove near the front of the Humanities Building. All are invited.

2. Research Foundation Employees

The Research Foundation and Liberty Mutual Insurance Company have partnered to offer a program called Group Savings Plus, which provides discounts on auto and homeowners insurance to all RF employees.

3. Reminder: International Travel Policy

As the semester begins, this is a reminder for the University community regarding the International Travel Policy (ITP).
1. All students who travel abroad on University programs are required to complete all ITP forms;
2. Faculty traveling abroad with students on University programs are required to complete the two-page itinerary form;
3. Faculty or staff traveling abroad on University business are strongly advised to complete all of the forms as well.
4. Permission for travel is required ONLY for countries on the State Department Travel Warning list at http://travel.state.gov/travel/warnings.html.
Forms can be found on the International Academic Programs (IAP) website at www.stonybrook.edu/iap (at the bottom of the home page).

Lawson Training Classes for the month of September to be held on 9/7/06 at 10am or you can come to the class on 9/21/06 at 1pm, both classes will be held in the IT Training Room, (HSC-Library - Computer Classroom - Room 3-133A), "For All Hospital Employees". To attend this class please contact Michele Thomas, Lawson Support Specialist, ext. 4-7805. All employees should have a SBUH main computer sign-on. There will be 2 parts covered in this class, the first half is for ordering from any of the Storerooms in the Hospital and the second half will cover ordering from an outside Vendor. Stony Brook EAP and Campus Recreation team up with America on the Move to inspire employees to achieve a healthier lifestyle. 3. Exploring Macromedia FLASH MX: - NCE 329 - 12 sessions - Fee: $629

Macromedia Flash is the professional standard for producing high-impact Web experiences. The focus is on creating animation for the Web. This course will guide students through the fundamentals of animation such as Flash drawing, story boarding, creating layers, key framing, character animation, and creating interactive animation. Students will have a thorough understanding of Flash basics, plus the know-how to build Flash projects incorporating sound, interactivity, and engaging animations.

4. Elevated Lipids And Cholesterol: An Integrative Approach To Optimize Levels

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting four, two-hour group visits for patients with elevated lipids and cholesterol.
Participants are examined and evaluated individually to assess cardiovascular risk, nutrition, exercise and stress levels as well as to determine if their lipid management is optimal. The group visits review factors that contribute to cardiovascular risk and increasing levels of lipids and insulin and addresses how they can be decreased with whole foods, exercise and stress reduction. Also reviewed are genetic influences, indications for medications, their side effects profile as well as the most current evidence-based information on supplements and vitamins.
The series is scheduled for September 6, 13, 20, 27, 2006 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park.
Most insurance plans are accepted with appropriate co-pay.

5. Defensive Driving Program for UUP Members and their immediate family members.

A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Monday and Tuesday, September 25 & 26, 2006 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the Wang Center Room 201, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members.
Cost is $25 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 3 pm.
Participants are usually entitled to a 10% discount on their automotive insurance. Check with your provider. The certificate is good for three years of savings!

7. Defensive Driving class begins October 5th.

The Craft Center is offering a six hour Defensive Driving course on two consecutive Thursdays, 10/05 and 10/12 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, Student Activities Center, room 311. Open to everyone. This class is an Empire Safety Council Accident Prevention Workshop. Pre-registration is required before attending class. 8. Bartending class to begin in October

The Craft Center Bartending class is a popular and useful entertainment course. Classes are open to everyone on campus and in the community (must be 18 or over). This course offers a complete introduction to mix drinks, liquors as well as bars management, in class practice (using simulated liquors), lectures and demos. Book and certificate is included. Two sections available to choose from: Sec A, six Wednesdays, begins October 4th and Sec B, six Tuesdays, begins Oct 10th. Both class are from 6:00pm to 9:00pm and are held in the SB Union basement room 081. Cost: $75/student, $90/non-student. Pre-registration is required. 9. Arts and Craft Classes on Campus

The Craft Center offers non-credit, low cost classes and is open to everyone on campus and in the community (17 years and older). Upcoming classes include: pottery on the wheel, ceramic hand-building, painting, drawing, jewelry classes and more. Bartending and defensive driving classes are also available. We provide the ideal relaxed atmosphere to unwind at the end of a day or to spend many hours on focused technical pursuits. Watch for our pottery sales and other events. Pre-registration is required. 10. Geriatric Care Management

The Schools of Social Welfare and Nursing at Stony Brook University are presenting four Geriatric Care Management Education and Training Workshops. The tuition for each individual workshop is $75. However, those who participate in all four workshops receive a $50 discount ($250 for all four workshops) and will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement in Geriatric Care Management.
On September 26th, the Elder Law, Ethics, Finance and Housing workshop will be offered at Southampton Hospital. This workshop, which will address recent changes in the Medicaid look-back period, has been accepted for continuing professional education by several professional disciplines, including nursing and law. (The other three workshops will be offered at Stony Brook Southampton in the near future.)

3. Position Available for Undergraduate Student

Seeking an upper-level undergraduate student in the sciences or engineering to work on a National Science Foundation supported research project together with a research group consisting of a professor, a Ph.D. scientist, and graduate students. This work will involve obtaining worldwide atmospheric radiosonde data and processing these data to obtain information on tropopausse behavior. This work requires some skill in using computers and preparing graphical information. While knowledge of meteorology is helpful, it is not necessary. It is likely that this research will result in original publications. This position is for 15 hours per week @ $10.00 per hour.
