3. September 11 5 Year Commemoration Ceremony
The September 11, 2001 5-year commemoration ceremony to honor alumni and other members of the Stony Brook family who were lost, will be held Friday, September 8, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Alumni Memorial Arch located in the grove near the front of the Humanities Building. All are invited.

1. Introducing Victoria Cassano, MD, MPH
The Department of Preventive Medicine is very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Victoria Cassano to their full-time faculty as Assistant Professor of Clinical Preventive Medicine. Dr. Cassano is also the newly appointed acting head of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine as well as acting director for Stony Brook Occupational Medicine clinical practices. Dr. Cassano will be seeing patients at the Stony Brook Occupational Medicine practices located in Stony Brook Medical Park, Route 347, Building 9, Suite C, Stony Brook. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 444-6250.Physicians who would like to speak directly with her can call 444-8074, or page her directly through the hospital operator.

1. Become a Literacy Tutor Volunteer
All you need is a high school diploma, two hours a week, and a desire to teach an adult to read and write or even to speak in English.
1 out of every 7 adults in Suffolk County, or 14% of our countys adult population, do not have the literacy skills to function fully in society.
These individuals cant read a newspaper, fill out a job application, help educate their children, fully participate in community life, and they cant read well enough to vote.
What Can You Do About It? You Can Train to Become a Volunteer Tutor!
Please call the Stony Brook Adult Literacy Center today to find out more about becoming a volunteer tutor and to enroll in the Fall Program.

There is an immediate need for blood and platelet donors. Your donation goes directly to a patient at Stony Brook Hospital. Please call Jennifer Peace at 444-7586 or email: jlpeace@notes.cc.sunysb.edu .
Nurses will be assisting you in a very comfortable environment. You should eat well before donating and drink plenty of water before and after.
If you are not able to donate please help us by sharing this information with as many family, friends and community members as possible.
Also, we are looking for small groups (under 20) who would like to host a special day when their group can come to donate and/or volunteer their time in helping us spread the word about donating.

2. University Cafe Sunday Acoustic Concert Series Fall Schedule includes The Strawbs, Eric Andersen, John Wesley Harding and Lynn Miles
The University Cafe's Sunday Acoustic Concert Series begins its third year on Sunday, September 17th at 2 P.M., with a co-bill of Nashville singer-songwriter Diana Jones and Hollywood actor turned songwriter and performer, Tim Grimm
Other Sunday afternoon shows (all at 2 P.M.) in the series include:
October 8th - The Acoustic Strawbs, the legendary British folk/rock group
October 22nd - Lynn Miles, acclaimed Canadian singer/songwriter

2. Elevated Lipids And Cholesterol: An Integrative Approach To Optimize Levels
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting four, two-hour group visits for patients with elevated lipids and cholesterol.
Participants are examined and evaluated individually to assess cardiovascular risk, nutrition, exercise and stress levels as well as to determine if their lipid management is optimal. The group visits review factors that contribute to cardiovascular risk and increasing levels of lipids and insulin and addresses how they can be decreased with whole foods, exercise and stress reduction. Also reviewed are genetic influences, indications for medications, their side effects profile as well as the most current evidence-based information on supplements and vitamins.
The series is scheduled for September 6, 13, 20, 27, 2006 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park.
Most insurance plans are accepted with appropriate co-pay.

1. Volunteers needed for a study that investigates Sleep and Metabolism in Women with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Women of Normal Weight, Who Have Been Diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Between the Ages of 31 and 40 OR Women of Normal Weight, in Good Health, Between the Ages of 31 and 60
In association with the Northport Veterans Administration and the Stony Brook General Clinical Research Center, researchers are conducting a study that investigates sleep and metabolism in women with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) compared to healthy women.
Healthy volunteers are needed to serve as the comparison group for IBS patients.
Participation involves a blood draw and two over-night sleep studies.
Compensation up to $500.00
