2. All About ... The Roundabout!
The intersection of Marburger Drive and Circle Road has been re-designed and constructed to include a "Roundabout". Navigating a roundabout is easy. But because people can be apprehensive about new things, its important that the campus community learn how to properly use the roundabout safely. 6. 2007 Per Diem Rates And Meal Allowance
Please note that all travel starting October 1, 2006 will follow the new 2007 Per Diem Rates for lodging and meals for domestic travel.
Be advised that the borough of Queens is no longer included under the Manhattan rates. Effective November 1, 2006 Queens is listed with their own per diem rates. The new rates can be found on the following websites:

7. Research Foundation International Travel
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a fact sheet about the raised threat level for all airline passengers. The threat level has been raised to SEVERE, or Red, for all travel between the United Kingdom and the United States and to HIGH, or Orange, for all other travel. These levels mean that the government has implemented much more stringent controls at airports. The list of restricted materials has increased significantly as has the time that it will take to clear through airport security checkpoints.

2. Become a Literacy Tutor Volunteer
All you need is a high school diploma, two hours a week, and a desire to teach an adult to read and write or even to speak in English.
1 out of every 7 adults in Suffolk County, or 14% of our countys adult population, do not have the literacy skills to function fully in society.
These individuals cant read a newspaper, fill out a job application, help educate their children, fully participate in community life, and they cant read well enough to vote.
What Can You Do About It? You Can Train to Become a Volunteer Tutor!
Please call the Stony Brook Adult Literacy Center today to find out more about becoming a volunteer tutor and to enroll in the Fall Program.

Nurses will be assisting you in a very comfortable environment. You should eat well before donating and drink plenty of water before and after.
If you are not able to donate please help us by sharing this information with as many family, friends and community members as possible.
Also, we are looking for small groups (under 20) who would like to host a special day when their group can come to donate and/or volunteer their time in helping us spread the word about donating.

1. Department of Campus Recreation Summer Hiking Trip
The Department of Campus Recreation will be organizing a hiking trip to the Rocky Point Hiking Trail on Friday, August 18 at 10:30am. Registration Fee is $10.00 per person which includes permit fees and lunch. This trip is for beginner/intermediate hikers in good health and will be approximately 4.5 miles in length. Participants must provide own transportation. Only students, faculty & staff of the University are eligible to participate. Registration is limited to 25 participants. Dreamweaver is the industry-standard website development software, supporting sophisticated functions such as JavaScript, Dynamic HTML, and CSS. This course will cover topics such as basic page creation, layout tables, frames v. no frames, how to edit HTML, internal FTP capabilities, and how to manage workflow. Students will explore the cross-application functions, such as incorporating Fireworks graphics and Flash buttons. (No knowledge of Flash required.)

2. Elevated Lipids And Cholesterol: An Integrative Approach To Optimize Levels
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting four, two-hour group visits for patients with elevated lipids and cholesterol.
Participants are examined and evaluated individually to assess cardiovascular risk, nutrition, exercise and stress levels as well as to determine if their lipid management is optimal. The group visits review factors that contribute to cardiovascular risk and increasing levels of lipids and insulin and addresses how they can be decreased with whole foods, exercise and stress reduction. Also reviewed are genetic influences, indications for medications, their side effects profile as well as the most current evidence-based information on supplements and vitamins.
The series is scheduled for September 6, 13, 20, 27, 2006 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park.

3. Colon Cancer The Third Most Prevalent Cancer In The United States

We are seeking healthy male and female volunteers from all ethnic groups, 50 years of age and older, of normal weight who are at risk for colon cancer, such as individuals with a history of colon polyps or colon cancer. Eligible subjects who complete the study will receive $70.00

4. Stress: A Fact Of Life
Do you know that stress can affect the brain, heart, hormones, and mental performance?
Did you ever wonder why some people get stressed out more easliy than others?
We are looking for men and women, 18-50 years of age, to participate in a non-invasive study.
Participation in this protocol requires that volunteers be free on two consecutive week-days including two hospital overnights, for example: Sunday night to Tuesday afternoon, or Tuesday night to Thursday afternoon. You will be free to pursue to your normal activities after 4:15pm, but you will need to be back for the overnight stay.
Compensation: $200.00

1. Position Available for Undergraduate Student
Seeking an upper-level undergraduate student in the sciences or engineering to work on a National Science Foundation supported research project together with a research group consisting of a professor, a Ph.D. scientist, and graduate students. This work will involve obtaining worldwide atmospheric radiosonde data and processing these data to obtain information on tropopausse behavior. This work requires some skill in using computers and preparing graphical information. While knowledge of meteorology is helpful, it is not necessary. It is likely that this research will result in original publications. This position is for 15 hours per week @ $10.00 per hour.
