1. Introducing Victoria Cassano, MD, MPH
The Department of Preventive Medicine is very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Victoria Cassano to their full-time faculty as Assistant Professor of Clinical Preventive Medicine. Dr. Cassano is also the newly appointed acting head of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine as well as acting director for Stony Brook Occupational Medicine clinical practices. Dr. Cassano will be seeing patients at the Stony Brook Occupational Medicine practices located in Stony Brook Medical Park, Route 347, Building 9, Suite C, Stony Brook. 4. Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program Information Session
Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program Information Session Tuesday September 12, 2006, 6 7:30 pm.
The Center for Biotechnology invites all qualified candidates to apply for the 2007 Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry program. This program is targeted toward graduate students and post docs seeking to transition into non-academic industry careers. This program will provide life scientists with a comprehensive understanding of the bioscience business environment to effectively enter the industry and/or government sector and to successfully contribute to the innovation and entrepreneurial aspects of industry. The deadline for application is October 31, 2006. Full and partial financial support is available to qualified candidates. Classes begin January 2007. Professor Tim Garret from the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics will present a seminar entitled, "Navigating Interactions Between Pollution and Clouds," on Wednesday, September 13. 6. Hip and Knee Pain Seminar
Seminar will include diagrams of the hip and knee with discussion of their normal anatomy, what can go wrong in either joint such as tendonitis, bursitis, synovitis, meniscal tears and osteoarthritis. Signs and symptoms of a problem, how to get a good diagnosis e.g., how to give a good history, x-rays with examples and the physical exam and what it tells us. Treatments for various problems are discussed including, diet, nutrition, exercise, medication, arthroscopy and hip and knee replacement surgery. There is also a question and answer period. Program: The AIDC 100 "Truth in Technologies 2006: Efficiency, Safety and Privacy" Forum will be held on October 5 at Stony Brook University. 9. Summertime Hypoxia in Smithtown Bay
Stony Brook University in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Smithtown will present a series of lectures at Smithtown Library starting fall 2006 through spring 2007. These will inform on local environmental conditions and other issues which are important for our citizens to understand so that we may better preserve all life in our community.
On September 27, 2006, at 7:00 p.m., Dr. R. L. Swanson, of the Marine Sciences Center, will present "Summertime Hypoxia in Smithtown Bay." This pervasive condition could pose a major threat to Long Island's aquatic habitats. Find out what it is, how it got here, and what will happen to our waterways if we don't find a way to reverse its effects.
There will be related discussion concerning the dredging of the Nissequogue River.

2. Six Native American Artists Exhibit Their Work at the University Art Gallery in the Staller Center
Recent work by six Native American artists will be exhibited at the University Art Gallery in the Staller Center from Tuesday, September 12 through October 18, 2006. The exhibition entitled "Paumanok" - a Native American name for Long Island - includes prints, paintings, video, mixed media installations, and woven photographs. The artists in the exhibition draw on indigenous cultural and artistic traditions while using contemporary materials. The exhibition aims to open a dialogue at Stony Brook University and beyond about Native American issues, art, and culture. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, noon to 4 pm, and Saturday, 7 to 9 pm. A reception for the artists will take place on Saturday, September 30, from 7 - 9 pm. 6. Department of Campus Recreation Bowling League Now Forming - Wednesday Night's
Teams are now forming for a Faculty/Staff Bowling League. Sign up as a team (3 or 4 people) or as an individual. League is on Wednesday nights at 6:00pm at Sports Plus Bowling Center in Lake Grove. Cost is only $8.00 per week which includes 3 games of bowling and shoe rental. League will start on Wednesday, September 27th and run through Wednesday, December 20th. This is the culminating project and a requirement for the Web Design Certificate. Using skills gained from all the courses in the certificate program, students create their own Web page using Publisher, FrontPage, Image Composer and GIF Animator.
An instructor is present at all sessions to assist the students and to answer any questions related to the site design.
Prerequisite: Enrollment is limited to those students in the Web Design Certificate Program.
All of the courses listed in the Web Design Certificate Program must be completed before a student will be allowed to register.

4. Nashville's Diana Jones and Hollywood's Tim Grimm to perform at The University Cafe, Sunday September 17th at 2 P.M.
Heralded Nashville songwriter and Kerrville New Folk winner Diana Jones will share a co-bill with Hollywood actor turned song-writer and performer, Tim Grimm, on Sunday September 17th at 2 P.M. at The University Cafe.
Diana's new album, My Remembrance of You, has spent 17 weeks on the Folk Music Radio Airplay Chart, including the #1 most-played song. Her voice and songs are reminiscent of Gillian Welch and Iris DeMent.
Tim Grimm was a successful actor (co-starring in NBC's Reasonable Doubts and appearing in feature films, including Clear and Present Danger) before returning to southern Indiana to resume a music career that included travelling and performing with Ramblin' Jack Elliott.

5. Stress: A Fact Of Life
Do you know that stress can affect the brain, heart, hormones, and mental performance?
Did you ever wonder why some people get stressed out more easliy than others?
We are looking for men and women, 18-50 years of age, to participate in a non-invasive study.
Participation in this protocol requires that volunteers be free on two consecutive week-days including two hospital overnights, for example: Sunday night to Tuesday afternoon, or Tuesday night to Thursday afternoon. You will be free to pursue to your normal activities after 4:15pm, but you will need to be back for the overnight stay.
Compensation: $200.00

Weekend Enrichment Program
(Math and Language School for 4-15 years olds)
Join our innovative program at SchoolPlus.
Our science and language classes give Long Island children an opportunity to experience learning in a university setting. Teachers include the leading specialists from Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Lab.
Classes are held at Stony Brook University; Most classes are taught in English; Small classes (5-10 students).
We offer the following programs:
Mathematics ages 5-15;
Physics ages 10 - 15;
English - ages 8 15;
Russian language - ages 5 - 15;
Art ages 5 -15;
Original enrichment program for 3-4 years old separate classes for English and Russian speaking children;

5. Annual Art Department Get-Together at the Pollock-Krasner House, Saturday September 16, 1-5 p.m.
