1. Introducing Dr. Apostolos K. Tassiopoulos
The Department of Surgery is very pleased to announce that Apostolos K. Tassiopoulos, MD, FACS, has joined our Division of Vascular Surgery as assistant professor of surgery. Dr. Tassiopoulos comes to Stony Brook from Rush University in Chicago, where he was an assistant professor of cardiovascular surgery, and a senior attending vascular surgeon at the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.
We hope that you will welcome Dr. Tassiopoulos to our community. Physicians who would like to speak directly with him should call 444-1279, or page him directly through the hospital operator. For consultations/appointments, please call 444-2565.

2. Become a Literacy Tutor Volunteer
All you need is a high school diploma, two hours a week,and a desire to teach an adult to read and write or even to speak in English.
1 out of every 7 adults in Suffolk County, or 14% of our countys adult population, do not have the literacy skills to function fully in society.
These individuals cant read a newspaper, fill out a job application, help educate their children, fully participate in community life, and they cant read well enough to vote.
What Can You Do About It? You Can Train to Become a Volunteer Tutor!
Please call the Stony Brook Adult Literacy Center today to find out more about becoming a volunteer tutor and to enroll in the Fall Program.

1. Department of Campus Recreation Summer Kayaking Trips
The Department of Campus Recreation will be organizing a kayaking trip in Port Jefferson Harbor on Monday, August 7 @ 10:30am. Registration Fee is $20.00 per person which includes kayak rental and lunch. Undergraduate students registered for summer classes are free. This trip is for beginner/intermediate kayakers in good health and will be approximately 5 hours length. Only students, faculty & staff of the University are eligible to participate. 2. Steve Pikiell Basketball Camp at Stony Brook University
Steve Pikiell and the entire Stony Brook Men's Basketall Staff is running 4 sessions of basketball camp this summer for boys ages 8-16. Our "Weekend Session" will be Friday June 30-Sunday July 2 from 9 am to 4 pm and cost $200. We are also running 3 weeks of traditional day camp. These three weeks are "Session I" Monday July 10-Friday July 14, "Session II" Monday July 24-Friday July 28, and "Session III" Monday July 31-Thursday August 3. All 3 sessions will run 9 am to 4 pm and the cost of Sessions I and II will be $295, while Session III costs $240.

3. Film Passes for Stony Brook Film Festival Include "An Evening with Alan Alda" For details: www.stonybrookfilmfestival.com
For a $55 Film Pass, festival goers will see features and shorts evenings and weekends for ten days, July 20-29, and enjoy "An Evening with Alan Alda" on Friday, July 28 at 7:30 at Staller Center. Mr. Alda is a long-time participant in the Stony Brook Southampton Writers Conference and will be talking about his career to Writers Workshop participants and film passholders. 5. The Blue Pipa Trio Concert at Wang Center Saturday, July 8, 7:30 p.m.
Southern Chinese folkloric music meets contemporary Jazz. Featuring Min Xiao-Fen, pipa/vocals; the masterful Mark Helias on double bass; and the sensitive playing of acoustic guitarist Steve Salerno. "Min Xiao-Fen is a pipa player like no other. When she speaks the language of Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington or Miles Davis, the results are not ersatz but transformational. Chuck Priore and the Stony Brook Football Staff will be holding a Youth Football Camp for kids ages 7 to 14. 7. British folk singer Pete Morton to appear at The University Cafe this Sunday at 7 P.M.
The University Cafe's Summer Acoustic Concert series is pleased to present singer/songwriter Pete Morton on Sunday, July 7th, at 7 P.M.
Pete comes from Nottingham, England, with a wealth of great songs and stage presence. His songs are an unruly mix of humor, politics, love and social comment.

This is a 6 hour course, two Thursday 7/13 and 7/20 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Class is held at the Student Activities Center, room 311. Open to everyone. Pre-registration and pre-payment is necessary. Send two checks: either $18/student or $22/non-student (payable to SBU Crafts Center), and additional $13 per person fee (payable to K. OBrien) and mail to: The Stony Brook Union Craft Center, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-3200. Please include your name, address, telephone number and class dates. This introductory course demonstrates the power and ease that makes Microsoft Excel the most-widely used spreadsheet application for office and home financial planning. Accountants, office managers, budget managers, even the family financial planner, will benefit from learning the basics of Excel. 4. Macromedia Fireworks MX: - NCE 327 - 4 sessions - Fee: $209
Create web graphics, from a simple logo to a sophisticated rollover or pop-up menu, with this user-friendly program from the leader in web design software applications. Fireworks writes the JavaScript required for complex web graphics, and seamlessly merges with Dreamweaver, Macromedia's web layout program. This course is a thorough introduction to this powerful program. Students will create their own graphics to be incorporated into their website designs in Dreamweaver.
