1. Introducing Hal A. Skopicki, MD, PhD

The Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Hal A. Skopicki as Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology. Dr. Skopicki will also serve as the director of the heart failure and cardiomyopathy program of Stony Brook Universitys Heart Center.
Dr. Skopickis areas of special interest include advanced cardiovascular disease, left ventricular support devices and mitral valve disease.
Dr. Skopicki will be seeing patients at University Hospital in the Heart Center on Level 5 of Stony Brook University Hospital as well as at the offices of Stony Brook Internists, PC in Islandia. For consultations, call 444-9600.

Deciding when to retire is strictly personal but, Will you still have a sense of purpose and meaning in retirement?. Have you developed hobbies and interests to pursue? Can you answer the question, What will you do each day after you retire?. Retirement with a purpose inspires and challenges. This workshop will address topics such as how to make the transition from work to retirement and planning for a fruitful retirement.

Impatica for PowerPoint simply converts the PowerPoint file into a compressed format that is optimized for streaming over the Internet. The Impatica file is typically 95% smaller than the PowerPoint HTML files.
All Stony Brook Faculty/Staff can download Impatica from Blackboard!
Bill Collins from Neurobiology will demonstrate during this session how he used Impatica during the Spring 2006 semester.

Statistics say one in five people have a disability. This is one minority group that any one of us could join at any given moment in our lives. Employees need to know their rights and responsbilities. Supervisors and managers should have working knowledge of the ADA, a civil rights law, and know how best to serve employees with disabilities. 1. Evolution 2006 meeting at Stony Brook University, June 23 - 27, 2006.

"Evolution 2006," the joint meeting of the Society for the Study of Evolution, the Society of Systematic Biologists, and the American Society of Naturalists will be hosted by the Department of Ecology and Evolution at SBU June 23 to 27, 2006. Most sessions/social events will be held at the Wang Center and SAC. Pre-meeting events are planned for June 22 and 23; social events take place most evenings during the meeting.
Interested faculty, postdocs and students from any department at SBU are encouraged to participate. Graduate students from any program may offer volunteer time in exchange for free registration. Students will be assigned jobs to minimize conflicts with attendance at symposia or sessions of interest to them. The Department of Campus Recreation will be organizing 2 mountain bike trips to the Rocky Point Mountain Bike trails on Monday, June 19 and on Friday, July 28 at 10:30am. Registration Fee is $10.00 per person, per trip which includes permit fees and lunch. This trip is for beginner/intermediate bikers in good health and will be approximately 6-10 miles in length. Participants must provide own transportation and own mountain bike/helmet/eye protection. Only students, faculty & staff of the University are eligible to participate. 6. Legendary British Folk-Rock Band Fairport Convention to perform at The University Cafe, Sunday June 11th at 6 P.M.

Fairport Convention, the legendary British Folk Rock band, with its roots in the 1960's, will perform at The University Cafe on Sunday, June 11th at 6 P.M. Fairport alumni include Richard Thompson, Iain Matthews, and the late Sandy Denny, with founding member Simon Nicol at the head of the present Fairport line up.

Create web graphics, from a simple logo to a sophisticated rollover or pop-up menu, with this user-friendly program from the leader in web design software applications. Fireworks writes the JavaScript required for complex web graphics,and seamlessly merges with Dreamweaver, Macromedia's web layout program. This course is a thorough introduction to this powerful program. Students will create their own graphics to be incorporated into their website designs in Dreamweaver.

Are you an overweight healthy non-smoker?
We invite you to participate in a study of how your lungs work.
This study involves pulmonary function testing (2 hours) , followed by 2 days of chest imaging (about 4 hours on the first day and 2 hours on the second day). We will be studying whether your weight is affecting the way your lungs clear things that you breathe in.
If you are interested and you are: Overweight* Never smoked, Do not have a cough, Are not pregnant, Are over the age of 18, No pacemaker or other device in your chest

4. Study to Identify New Cancer Markers

The General Clinical Research Center at Stony Brook University Hospital is seeking healthy volunteers for a study to identify new cancer markers inn blood, tissue and body fluids to develop laboratory tests that may diagnose cancers earlier and/or identify patients at risk for a poor outcome and who may benefit from more aggressive therapy than is normally recommended. Volunteers are offered compensation up to $25 plus hospital parking.

7. Stress: A Fact Of Life

Do you know that stress can affect the brain, heart, hormones, and mental performance?
Did you ever wonder why some people get stressed out more easliy than others?
We are looking for men and women, 18-50 years of age, to participate in a non-invasive study.
Participation in this protocol requires that volunteers be free on two consecutive week-days including two hospital overnights, for example: Sunday night to Tuesday afternoon, or Tuesday night to Thursday afternoon. You will be free to pursue to your normal activities after 4:15pm, but you will need to be back for the overnight stay.
Compensation: $200.00
