1. It's time to renew your library material.

Faculty, Management Confidential and Professional staff who currently have borrowed library material from the Main, Music and/or the Science/Engineering Library, with a due date of December 22, 2005 are urged to renew at this time. The new due date, after properly renewing, will be May 16, 2006.
For information on how to renew via STARS/OPAC, please go to the URL.
To renew in person, please present your ID card to service desk staff. It is not necessary to bring the material into the library in order to have them renewed. There are no phone renewals. There is a three time renewal limit per book. Thank you.

Part 1, How to Create & Maintain a Budget - This workshop will supply you with the tools to create and maintain a weekly and monthly budget. A budget form listing all the categories of income and expenses will be supplied to you. We will check each category and discuss where money can be saved and address other areas where there maybe a shortage.
Part 2, How Does Credit Affect Your Everyday Life - This workshop will address the necessity of having good credit and how it applies to more than just obtaining a loan or a credit card. When you use your credit cards we will address what are the right ways to charge and the correct ways to pay. January 25 and 27, 12:00-1:00, Wang Center, Rm 201.

3. Grant Writing Workshop

The Office of the Vice President for Research will present a Grant-writing workshop on Wednesday, January 18 at the Student Activities Center, from Noon to 1:30 P.M.
Led by Dr. Martin Schoonen, Associate Vice President for Research and Professor of Geosciences, and by Mr. Peter Saal of the Research Resources Center, the program will explore a variety of topics, including:

2. Rod MacDonald to present songs of political and social comment at The University Cafe, Sunday, January 15th at 2 P.M.

The University Cafe begins its winter, 2006 series with a performance by Rod MacDonald on Sunday, January 15th at 2 PM. MacDonald has been described as "one of the most politically and socially aware lyricists of our time" and "the quintessential singer/songwriter of contemporary folk music." A veteran of the Greenwich Village folk scene, MacDonald addresses topics straight from today's news, sometimes serious, while other times satirical.

2. Menopause - An Integrative Approach To Management

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine at Stony Brook University Hospital will be presenting a series of three, two-hour workshops on menopause.
Each participant will be examined and evaluated individually in order to assess their specific menopausal symptoms and avenues of treatment.
The physiological symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, insomnia, cognitive difficulties, etc. will be discussed in detail. We will also explore the cultural attitudes associated with this transition and learn about several approaches to ease symptoms including hormone therapy (conjugated estrogen and bioidentical hormones), herbal remedies, nutritional medicine, exercise, and mind/body techniques such as breathing and meditation techniques.
The series is scheduled for Wednesdays, February 8, 15, March 1, 2006 at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.

3. Become a Geriatric Care Manager!

With older adults now the fastest growing segment of Long Island's population, the Schools of Social Welfare and Nursing at Stony Brook University are sponsoring a Geriatric Care Manager Education and Training Certificate Program. This program is designed for social workers, nurses, paralegals, health professionals and those who work for government agencies, not-for-profit associations, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, senior housing, home care and senior citizen organizations. This four-day program will be offered at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University from March 13 -16, 2006. 1. 2006 Innovative Technology Development Program - Call for Applications

The Center for Biotechnology announces the 2006 Call for Applications to the Innovative Technology Development (ITD) Program. The ITD Program supports commercially promising, translational research in all areas of medical biotechnology, including research products, diagnostics, or therapeutics. Funding is available to faculty at SBU for translational research on the academic campus. Applications must provide matched funding from a New York State company, evidence for commercialization potential, and be consistent with the Centers mission of economic development in NYS. We encourage projects in collaboration with the Centers Applied Bioscience Laboratories (ABL) or Custom Microarray Facility (CMF).

2. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Wanted

The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with cancer, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

3. 2006 SBU/BNL Seed Grant Program

The eighth annual SBU/BNL Seed Grant Award Program will begin accepting proposals. This program serves to further strengthen the programmatic links between Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Lab.
Grants of up to $25k may be awarded (note that these proposals do not have overhead charges). Successful proposals will describe: how this seed support is likely to lead to fully developed applications to standard agencies supporting research or in fields where external support is less likely, how the work builds on Stony Brook University's academic priorities. Proposals must also describe specific collaborations with BNL personnel, however, proposal submittal is restricted to members of the Stony Brook University faculty.

6. Volunteers needed for a study that investigates Sleep and Metabolism in Women with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

If you are woman in good health or suffer with Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS)and are between ages of 21 and 60, we Would Like to Invite You To Participate in a Research Project.
In association with the Northport Veterans Administration and the Stony Brook General Clinical Research Center, researchers are conducting a study that investigates sleep and metabolism in women with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) compared to healthy women.
Healthy volunteers are needed to serve as the comparison group for IBS patients.
Participation involves a blood draw and two over-night sleep studies.
Every aspect of your participation in this study will be kept confidential.
And, as a courtesy for spending time and assisting the completion of this research, you will be compensated upto $500.00

9. Recruiting healthy, right-handed boys, ages 6-11 years, who are not on medication, to take part in a neuroimaging study.

The Cody Center, in collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory and the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) at Stony Brook University, is currently recruiting healthy, right-handed boys, ages 6-11 years, who are not on medication, to take part in a neuroimaging study.
The purpose of the study is to increase our understanding of how language is processed by the brain in the presence of Autism Spectrum Disorder by using an MRI technique called functional MRI (fMRI).
Compensation: $40.00 Gift Certificate to BORDERS Per Visit The procedure does not involve any injections, use contrast material or radiation. MRI is considered a safe procedure in children.

If you have CFS, you are invited to participate in a non-drug treatment study at funded by the National Institutes of Health. The project involves the study of very low level exercise therapy in people with CFS. Participants will be paid for their efforts.

20. Volunteers Wanted for Research on Sarcopenia

Many people are aware of losing muscle mass and muscle strength as they get older. The General Clinical Research Center at Stony Brook University Hospital seeks Seniors 60 and over in reasonably good health and young adults 20-35 years of age to participate in a research study to find out why this happens and how it might be prevented. Eligible volunteers will be compensated up to $1600 for their participation.

21. Study to Identify New Cancer Markers

The General Clinical Research Center at Stony Brook University Hospital is seeking healthy volunteers for a study to identify new cancer markers inn blood, tissue and body fluids to develop laboratory tests that may diagnose cancers earlier and/or identify patients at risk for a poor outcome and who may benefit from more aggressive therapy than is normally recommended. Volunteers are offered compensation up to $25 plus hospital parking.

Seawolves Sport Camps
We offer a wide range of athletic sport camps for children between the ages 7 - 18: Baseball Camp, Tennis Camp, Softball Camp, Boys Lacrosse Camp, Girls Soccer Camp, Boys Soccer Camp, Boys Basketball Camp, Girls Basketball Camp, Volleyball Camp, and Cheerleading Camp.
Summer Camp
For children between the ages 5 - 12, co-ed, June 26th - August 18th, 2006. Offers three hours of athletics and three hours of academics each day, computers and swimming included daily.
Camp Academies
Camp Academies for children entering grades 4th- 11th specializing in one week programs in the following categories: Medical/Athletic; Chess; Chess/Medical; Art; Computers; Acting and Crafty Arts.

2. Volunteer To Work With Young Children At Stony Brook Child Care Services

Enjoy working and playing with young children? Know someone else who does? Join the team at Stony Brook Child Care Services as a volunteer. Work alongside our professional teaching staff in a facility designed and equipped for very young children. You can volunteer for as few as 3 hours a week and can choose to work with Infants and Toddlers or Preschoolers. The center is open Monday through Friday 7 am - 6 pm year round.
