1. Introducing Dr. Apostolos K. Tassiopoulos

The Department of Surgery is very pleased to announce that Apostolos K. Tassiopoulos, MD, FACS, has joined our Division of Vascular Surgery as assistant professor of surgery. Dr. Tassiopoulos comes to Stony Brook from Rush University in Chicago, where he was an assistant professor of cardiovascular surgery, and a senior attending vascular surgeon at the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.
We hope that you will welcome Dr. Tassiopoulos to our community. Physicians who would like to speak directly with him should call 444-1279, or page him directly through the hospital operator. For consultations/appointments, please call 444-2565.

1. Lawson Training Class

Lawson Training Classes for the month of July to be held on 7/5/06 at 10am or 7/26/06 at 1pm, these classes will be held in the IT Training Room, (HSC-Library - Computer Classroom - Room 3-133A), "For All Hospital Employees". To attend either of these classes please contact Michele Thomas, Lawson Support Specialist, ext. 4-7805. All employees attending should have a SBUH main computer sign-on. There will be 2 parts covered in these classes, the first half is for ordering from the Storerooms in the Hospital and the second half will cover ordering from an outside Vendor. I suggest that all employees who are either new to Stony Brook Hospital or need a refresher course, you are more than welcome to attend this class.

1. Steve Pikiell Basketball Camp at Stony Brook University

Steve Pikiell and the entire Stony Brook Men's Basketall Staff is running 4 sessions of basketball camp this summer for boys ages 8-16. Our "Weekend Session" will be Friday June 30-Sunday July 2 from 9 am to 4 pm and cost $200. We are also running 3 weeks of traditional day camp. These three weeks are "Session I" Monday July 10-Friday July 14, "Session II" Monday July 24-Friday July 28, and "Session III" Monday July 31-Thursday August 3. All 3 sessions will run 9 am to 4 pm and the cost of Sessions I and II will be $295, while Session III costs $240.

2. Center/Italian Studies Concert-Alpine Folkloric Chorus from Trentino,Italy,July 2, 2 pm, SAC Auditorium, Free;Open to Public.

The Center for Italian Studies presents the Coro San Romedio-Anaunia, an Alpine Folkloric Chorus from the Trentino Region of Italy, in concert, Sunday, July 2, 2006, 2 p.m. at the University's Student Activity Center Auditorium. A rare opportunity to hear the unique and legendary, "Canti di Montagna" (Italian Songs of the Mountain).

3. University Cafe presents Sunday Evening Acoustic Concerts in July and August

The University Cafe Sunday Evening Acoustic Concert Series will feature British folk singer Pete Morton on July 9th at 7 P.M. and Lisa Moscatiello, vocalist/guitarist with Fred Lieder on cello, on August 13th at 7 P.M. James O'Malley will open for Lisa.
Tickets are $15.00 general public, with a $10.00 ticket for Stony Brook students, faculty and staff (with ID).

5. The Blue Pipa Trio Concert at Wang Center Saturday, July 8, 7:30 p.m.

Southern Chinese folkloric music meets contemporary Jazz. Featuring Min Xiao-Fen, pipa/vocals; the masterful Mark Helias on double bass; and the sensitive playing of acoustic guitarist Steve Salerno. "Min Xiao-Fen is a pipa player like no other. When she speaks the language of Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington or Miles Davis, the results are not ersatz but transformational. 5. Macromedia Dreamweaver MX: - NCE 328 - 6 sessions - Fee $319

Dreamweaver is the industry-standard website development software, supporting sophisticated functions such as JavaScript, Dynamic HTML, and CSS. This course will cover topics such as basic page creation, layout tables, frames v. no frames, how to edit HTML, internal FTP capabilities, and how to manage workflow. Students will explore the cross-application functions, such as incorporating Fireworks graphics and Flash buttons. (No knowledge of Flash required.)

1. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Wanted

The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with cancer, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

7. Stress: A Fact Of Life

Do you know that stress can affect the brain, heart, hormones, and mental performance?
Did you ever wonder why some people get stressed out more easliy than others?
We are looking for men and women, 18-50 years of age, to participate in a non-invasive study.
Participation in this protocol requires that volunteers be free on two consecutive week-days including two hospital overnights, for example: Sunday night to Tuesday afternoon, or Tuesday night to Thursday afternoon. You will be free to pursue to your normal activities after 4:15pm, but you will need to be back for the overnight stay.
