1. WEST CAMPUS/HSC State/Research Foundation B140W Tuition Waiver Program

This is a reminder to all full-time State and Research Foundation employees on West Campus and HSC that the B140W tuition waiver request form for the Fall, 2003 semester must be submitted to Benefits, Z=0751, no later than the close of business on FRIDAY, JULY 25, 2003 for consideration. Forms received after that date will be put on a waiting list. Please call Sandy White at 2-6167 or email alessandra.white@stonybrook.edu to request a form. Please note that the UUP Tuition Assistance Program is a separate funding program for UUP represented employees only and the request form for that program does not have to be submitted by the above date.

Dr. Gary Lewin, of the Mx-Delbruck-Centrum, in Germany, will be giving a Seminar entitled: ""Genomic Approaches to Study Sensory Neuron Mechanotransduction" for the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior, on Monday, July 28th, 2003 at 12:00 Noon in Room 038 of the Life Sciences Building.

1. Stress Reduction Seminar

The first in an upcoming series of "Preventing Health Risks" seminars conducted by the Clinical Service of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook University. This seminar will focus on the principals of stress reduction and address risk factors and the basics of stress physiology. Instruction will be given on preventive and stress reduction techniques. If you were unable to donate blood at our June 24 and 25 Blood Drives, you have another chance! On Wednesday, July 23, there will be a Blood Drive in SAC Ballroom B from 10:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. All donors, attempted donors, and volunteers at the Drive will receive their choice of a short-sleeve Stony Brook Blood Drive T-shirt OR a Loew's movie ticket. 3. Golf Fund Raiser to Benefit Habitat for Humanity

A golf outing to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity will be held at the Mill Pond Golf Course in Medford on Wednesday, October 8th. Tickets are $140.00 and will include the green fee, cart, range balls, lunch at the turn, BBQ dinner, prizes and a raffle. The event is open to faculty, staff, students, friends, and family. 1. 2003 Summer Girls Lacrosse Clinic Series

The Seawolves Women's Lacrosse Team is offering 3 Girls Lacrosse Clinics this summer on July 1, July 29, August 13, 2003. SB faculty and staff will receive a $10.00 discount. The Seawolves Girls Lacrosse Clinics are designed specifically for girls and young women who want to take their game to the next level. Staffed by experienced coaches who are familiar with the women's game on the collegiate level, the clinics combine basic and advanced skill instruction, offensive and defensive strategies, and game experiences to help players put it all together. 4. 2003 Seawolves Football Season Tickets Now On Sale

Season tickets for the 2003 Stony Brook Seawolves football season are now on sale. Stony Brook will look to extend its undefeated home winning streak inside Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium when it hosts the Siena Saints on Saturday, Sept. 13th at 6:00 p.m. The first 5,000 fans will receive a free Howl Towl. There will also be a post game fireworks display.

1. Alzheimer's Disease Trial At SUNY Stony Brook

Study: A Trial of Simvastatin (Zocor) to Slow the Progression of Alzheimer's Disease Sponsored by: NIH through Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study
All eligible participants with mild-moderate AD would remain on their current AD treatments. In addition, they would randomize to receive either simvastatin or placebo

3. Sarcopenia Study in those over 60 years of age

Are you over 60 years of age and in reasonably good health. Then maybe you would be interested in participating in a research study. Study participants receive payment up to $1600. For more information, please contact Bernice Sealy at 631-444-3740.

4. Select - Selenium And Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial.

SELECT is a research study being conducted to see if prostate cancer can be prevented.
Men who participate in this study will take two capsules a day. Some men will take only selenium or vitamin E and some will take both. Others will take a placebo (sugar capsule).
Participants will visit their local study site twice a year for at least seven years, and no more than twelve years. About 32,000 men will take part in this study.
Men free of prostate cancer who are age 55 or older may be able to take part in this study. African-American men may join at age 50 or older.
Taking part in SELECT may not help you directly. But we hope that the information learned from this study will benefit your sons, grandsons, and future generations.

5. Diabetes And Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. Study participants receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment up to $300.00. Research Study at the General Clinical Research Center, University Hospital.
If you had PREVIOUS PRETERM labor and you are PREGNANT NOW, you may be eligible for a research study that is looking at different ways to manage stress and cope during pregnancy.
Through this study you may learn relaxation techniques, coping skills and stress reduction techniques. These skills may be useful to you during and after your pregnancy.

The Oncology nurse from the Cancer Helpline will be available at the Health Resource Center located in the main entrance of the hospital on level 5, every Thursday from 1:00pm-2:00pm during the month of July.
