1. The Stony Brook University Student Health Service is offering the FluMist Vaccine FREE to Students, Faculty and Staff.
It's not too late to get your vaccine against influenza. While supplies last, the Student Health Service will be giving out FluMist Vaccine FREE to students, faculty and staff members of Stony Brook University. FluMist is a new needle free vaccine to help prevent the flu in those that are between 5 and 50 years of age. The injectable influenza vaccine is also available for a $15 fee. 3. Alumni Association Student Awards
Do you know a student who deserves some recognition? The Alumni Association is sponsoring eight awards to students who have excelled in different areas, including academics, leadership, and the improvement of community life. Recipients will receive a plaque honoring their accomplishments, as well as a cash award. Please help us spread the word! Applications can be obtained from the Alumni Office. Supervisor Development Programs!
If you are a first level supervisor and would like to enhance your skills, this program is for you!
This program runs once a year and has limited seating, so register now!
This is a comprehensive program which focuses on the competencies necessary to be an effective supervisor. This program provides a firm foundation in the following areas: Gaining respect and credibility, understanding your work unit, creating a motivation environment, communicating with your employees, delegating effectively, performance planning and evaluation, counseling and disciplinary process, EAP supervisory training, Understanding your legal responsibilities, diversity in the workplace, creativity and problem solving.

2. Blackboard Workshops / Seminars over Intercession
Instructional Computing will be offering Blackboard sessions over Intercession beginning the week of January 6th. These sessions are open to all Stony Brook faculty, staff and Graduate TA's.
Sessions will include - "What is Blackboard?" & "Posting Content to your Blackboard site"
There will two special sessions.
Wednesday January 14th - 1-2:30pm in CELT (Melville Library E1337)
Blackboard Show and Tell - Stony Brook Faculty sharing Blackboard experiences with their peers. All faculty who are interested in sharing or seeing how Blackboard is being used on campus are invited to attend!
Also on Wednesday January 14th, we will hold a Blackboard workshop for Adjunct Instructors from 6-8pm in the Library PC Classroom C1640B.

The USB Cat Network works to humanely trap, neuter, vaccinate, and care for the many feral cats that live on campus. 1. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Needed
The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with cancer, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

2. Are You Depressed? We Can Help!
The Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University is conducting up to a 6 month clinical trial involving medication with all participants and the addition of psychotherapy with some. Must be willing to travel up to two times a week for up to 3 months to the site and be available late afternoons/early evenings. If you have been feeling depressed (sad, down) most of the time for at least two years, you may be eligible to participate. All evaluations and treatments will be provided free of charge. 3. Recruitment for an ADHD and Strattera study
The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Stony Brook is recruiting girls and boys between the ages of 6 and 12 inclusive, with a primary diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder to participate in a double blind study. Eligible patients who satisfy screening criteria will participate in a 4 month study where they will be provided with Strattera, either alone or combined with Concerta. Study volunteers will be monitored during the study for safety and efficacy. Children may be eligible to participate if they have been inadequate responders to any stimulant, and have not taken Strattera. There is no charge for the extensive evaluations done as part of the study which include a psychiatric evaluation, regularly scheduled medical assessments and follow-up psychiatric assessments. Medications will be provided free of charge for the duration of the study.

4. 2004 Innovative Technology Development (ITD) Program - Call for Applications
The Center for Biotechnology is seeking applications for the 2004 Innovative Technology Development (ITD) Program. The program offers funding for commercially promising research in medical biotechnology, including research, diagnostic, or therapeutic products or devices. Funding is available to faculty for translational research on the academic campus. Applications must address commercialization potential and be consistent with the Centers' mission of economic development in NYS. New York State industry-matched, or Sensor CAT-matched, or SPIR-matched proposals are encouraged. All applications will be competitively reviewed for scientific, business, and intellectual property potential by academic and industry reviewers. We also seek projects that are complementary to, and collaborate with the Center's Applied Bioscience Laboratory or Custom Microarray Facility. 2. Summer 2004 Undergraduate Research Internship Program
The Center for Biotechnology is accepting applications for Summer 2004 Undergraduate Research Internship Program. Internships will be established within the local biotechnology industry. Students will spend their summers, at a company, learning laboratory techniques and contributing to specific research projects. Students interested in careers in the biotechnology industry would be optimal candidates for selection as trainees under this program. Applicants will be selected from students beginning their junior or senior year who are majoring in any biology or chemistry department. Students in other life sciences departments, with equivalent but not exact qualifications as outlined in the application guidelines, are encouraged to contact Angeline Judex to discuss candidate eligibility.
