1. Presidential Mini-Grants, President's Awards Programs -- Applications and Nominations Suspended for 2003-2004 Academic Year
In consideration of budget cuts levied in fiscal '02-'03, and in anticipation of possible cuts to come in fiscal '03-'04, the nomination and application processes for the Presidential Mini-Grant Programs for Departmental Diversity Initiatives and Innovative Teaching Projects, and the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Team Leadership, Diversity and Affirmative Action, and Classified Service are suspended for academic year '03-'04. It is hoped that these programs can be resumed, pending an improved budget outlook, for fiscal '04-'05.
However, all SUNY-based Chancellor's/President's Awards' application processes and the awarding of the Distinguished Professor titles will be continued for fiscal '03-'04, subject to SUNY approval
Faculty/staff members seeking to collaborate with students on Diversity-related themes may inquire with the Office for Diversity and Affirmative Action (ex. 2-6280) regarding opportunities in the "Dialogues Across Differences" mini-grant competition for '03-'04.

2. Achieving Organizational Excellence: A Step-By-Step Guide to Quality Improvement(HTNW24)- Training for Hospital Employees- 9/16/03 (9am -1pm)
This "hands-on" workshop presented by Continuous Quality Improvement is designed to provide employees with a basic understanding of Quality Improvement principles and tools. The first half of the seminar consists of discussions and exercises intended to provide the participants with the skill and knowledge needed to apply a systematic method of process improvement, FOCUS-PDCA, to their daily work life. 3. Classified Evaluations - CSEA and PEF(HTNW26)- Training for Hospital Employees- in the HSC- 9/19/03 (9am -12pm)
Employee evaluations are a fact of life and part of virtually every supervisor's job. In this two-hour workshop, participants will discuss contractual and governance requirements for evaluations, the process of completing an effective evaluation and the Human Resources reporting system of 'To Dos' and 'Past Dues.' Participants will walk through the process from Performance Program through Evaluation and will be able to better understand the concept behind date changes. 4. Lawson Requistion Training (HTNW27)-for Hospital Employees in the MILC-HSC, Level 2,- 9/16, 10/1, 10/21 (9-11am)
This workshop is designed to take you through the process of entering various types of procurement requistions in the Lawson system including: Entering, changing, and deleting; Stores & Vendor requisitions; Adding another page of items; Adding comments to a requisition, Checking for approvals; Finding a purchase order number for a requisition; Inquiring on requisitions, Inquiring on a budget; and Blanket Order releases. 5. Third Annual Antonija Prelec Memorial Lecture
The Third Annual Antonija Prelec Memorial Lecture will be held Wednesday, October 1, at 2:00 PM in the Atkins Learning Center (4th floor, HSC). This year's Prelec Memorial Scholar is Deanna B. Marcum MLS, Ph.D., Associate Librarian for Library Services, Library of Congress and former President of the Council on Library and Information Services. Dr. Marcum will lecture on "The Relationship of Scholars to Libraries in the Digital Age." All interested are invited to attend. A reception in the HSC Galleria will follow. Please consider being a Captain for Volunteers in your area to join in the Suffolk County American Heart Walk to be held at the New York Institute of Technology in Central Islip, NY, on Sunday, October 26, 2003, for a 5K Walk. 3. The Adult Literacy Center At Stony Brook - Needs You!
The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University (SBUALC)is a partnership between the Literacy Volunteers of America-Suffolk County, Inc. and Stony Brook University. The Center is designed to serve the employees, students, their families, stakeholders, and other constituents.
The Adult Literacy Center focuses on the university primary missions of teaching, research, and service. Services include basic literacy tutoring for the low-level reader (below 6th grade) and for those in need of conversational English skills.
The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is in need of volunteers to help individuals within our community learn to read and write and/or speak conversational English. A Tutor Training Workshop will be offered on-campus September 11th - October 30th. 2. Seawolves Football Season Opener Just 19 Days Away! Howl Towl Giveaway and Fireworks Highlight September 13th Game
The Stony Brook football team opens the 2003 season on Saturday, September 13th when it hosts the Siena Saints at 6:00 p.m. inside Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The first 5,00 fans receive a free Howl Towl and there will be a post game fireworks display to follow the game!
The Seawolves won all five games at home in its inaugural season and over 28,000 fans were a part of it. Don's miss out!

The Department of Campus Recreation-Wellness Center will be hosting a Fitness-A-Thon on Tuesday, September 16 from 11:00am - 8:00pm in the SAC Auditorium. 9. Auditions for SBU Pre-College and Community Music Programs, Adult Chamber Music Workshop on September 22.
The Workshops, now beginning their fourth year, are open to dedicated adult musicians of all levels of ability and experience. Ensembles for strings, woodwinds, brass, piano, and voice will be formed based on performance level and the best possible instrumentation. Pre-existing groups are also welcome. Ensembles will be coached by well-known and experienced musicians who bring years of chamber music coaching to the program. The workshops will be eight weeks in length and include six 90 minute coaching sessions, culminating in a recital in the Staller Center Recital Hall on December 7. Auditions for the workshop will be held on Monday, September 22, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The fee is $225 for the eight-week session. 10. MusicBasics for Kids, Classes Forming for Kindergarten through 6th Graders
Experience music through rhythmic movement, ear-training, singing games, and improvisation. Taught by Dorothea Cook, a certified instructor of Dalcroze Eurhythmics, the class provides an excellent and joyful foundation for all aspects of a lifetime of music making. Three levels of classes meet on Saturday mornings in the Music Department starting on September 20 and running through June. The fee for the academic year is $600, payable quarterly.

3. Defensive Driving Program Offered For UUP Members And Their Immediate Family Members
A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving Program is being offered Monday, September 29, 2003 and Monday, October 6, 2003 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the SAC Room 203 for all UUP members and their immediate family members. Attendance at both classes is required. Cost is $25.00 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Contact Corinne at Ext 2-6570 for more information.

4. Division of Wellness & Chronic Illness - Integrative Asthma Care & Prevention
The Division of Wellness and Chronic will be conducting a three-part series on Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention for participants twelve years of age and older.
Participants are examined and evaluated individually to assess asthma severity and current treatment regimen.
Group discussions review state-of-the-art medical management; asthma triggers; prevention; and proper use of inhalers, spacers and peak flow meters. Participants receive information relating to how nutrition with whole foods can modify the symptoms of allergies and inflammation. Also discussed is the value and safety of some nutritional supplements and herbs used for allergies and asthma. Training in basic breathing exercises, yoga postures, self-hypnosis, meditation and guided imagery is included.
The series is scheduled for Wednesdays, September 10, 17, and 24 between 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park. Most insurance plans accepted with appropriate co-payment for each visit.

2. MRI Study of Flow in the Brain and Spine
Volunteers are needed to participate in an MRI study to investigate new methods for imaging flow patterns of blood and cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and spine. The goal of the study is to understand flow patterns in healthy individuals in order to compare these results with the abnormal flow patterns seen in individuals with diseases such as hydrocephalus and spinal cysts. For the current phase of studies, we are seeking healthy individuals with no previous history of head or spinal trauma, arachnoid or spinal cysts, hydrocephalus, brain tumors or any contraindication for an MRI exam. The study will involve 1 hour of your time and be completely non-invasive. No injections will be given. There will be no monetary compensation for this study.

If you are a post-menopausal woman, not taking medications for osteoporosis, The School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook is conducting a clinical research project on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia. 2. University Orchestra at Stony Brook - AUDITIONS on Tuesday, September 9th
Auditions for the University Orchestra (MUS262) - Susan Deaver, conductor - will be held on Tuesday, September 9th from 10 to 1 and 2 to 5 p.m. in the Department of Music/Staller Center - room 2342. Openings for woodwinds, brass, percussion and all strings (violin, viola, cello & bass). Open to all Stony Brook University undergraduate and graduate students with previous orchestral experience.
