The international travel assistance benefit is available to anyone traveling outside the home country on official Research Foundation of SUNY business. The spouse and dependent children are also covered when accompanying the person working on Foundation business. the full. The RF travel assistance benefit does not provide hospital or medical insurance. RF pays the full cost of the premium. Employees traveling abroad on official RF business should contact RF benefits at 2-6163 for futher information.

This workshop is designed to inform supervisors and managers of the various components of the Classification and Compensation unit within the Human Resources Department. Development of the comprehensive job/position descriptions, and the process used to classify positions based on the job/position description is examined. 2. Achieving Organizational Excellence: A Step-By-Step Guide to Quality Improvement(HTNW24)- Training for Hospital Employees- 9/16/03 (9am -1pm)
This "hands-on" workshop presented by Continuous Quality Improvement is designed to provide employees with a basic understanding of Quality Improvement principles and tools. The first half of the seminar consists of discussions and exercises intended to provide the participants with the skill and knowledge needed to apply a systematic method of process improvement, FOCUS-PDCA, to their daily work life. 3. Recognizing Impairment in the Workplace- Presented by: Employee Assistance Program(HTNW23)- Training for Hospital Employees- 9/18/03 (9am -12pm)
Your role as a supervisor is a critical one in assisting workers to seek professional help and consequently improve their levels of functioning on the job and in their personal lives. Through knowledge and practice, participants will be able to achieve the following workshop objectives: To identify specific behavioral and job performance problems. To review the myriad of problems that may be the cause of deteriorating job performance; e.g. depression, substance abuse, family crisis, death of a loved one, etc. To understand the possible dynamics in the supervisor/supervisee relationship when faced with poor performance. To role play techniques to ensure a successful workplace intervention. Employee evaluations are a fact of life and part of virtually every supervisor's job. In this two-hour workshop, participants will discuss contractual and governance requirements for evaluations, the process of completing an effective evaluation and the Human Resources reporting system of "To Dos" and "Past Dues." Participants will walk through the process from Performance Program through Evaluation and will be able to better understand the concept behind date changes. 6. Workplace Violence: Supervisory Training for Safety and Awareness(HTNW03)- Training for Hospital Employees- in the HSC- 11/13/03 (9am-12pm)
The goal of this program, presented by EAP, is to create awareness of the Drug-Free Workplace Act and its purpose. At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to: Describe the types of persons that disrupt the workplace and their violent behaviors. Discuss threats and their impact on the employee and the workplace. Discuss the importance of reporting and documenting threats and violent measures. Describe measures to take to eliminate conditions that cause conflict. Discuss measures to take to diffuse the escalation of conflict. Understand the supervisor?s role and responsibility in regard to workplace violence prevention. 7. Dealing with Difficult Patients(HTNW04)- Training for Hospital Employees- in the HSC- 12/04/03 (9am-12pm)
Health care workers are often called upon to maintain their professionalism while dealing with difficult, demanding or potentially violent patients. This workshop will address ways that employees can protect themselves using non-violent crisis intervention techniques while maintaining the safety and dignity of patients. Additionally, participants will learn ways to recognize potentially volatile situations and the need to have a safety plan of action. 1. Interdependence Day - September 12, 2003 "ID2003"
While September 11 is a solemn day of reflection and remembrance, a group of international and U.S. leaders have designated September 12th as a day of hope, celebration, and civic participation. At SBU, we will mark the day with art, music, food, speakers, and workshops on the relationships between democracy and global interdependence. We will explore together how our national independence must take into account global interdependencies.
The day seeks to help "activate democracy" on our campus and in our communities through art, music, and workshops. Workshops on "Work in a Globalized World," "Citizenship Skills," "Dialogues across Differences" and a "Primer on Globalization" are designed to provide ideas and resources for becoming active and informed citizens in an interdependent world.
Food, art, and lecture will take place in SAC Ballroom A 12:00-2:15); Workshops will be held in SAC meeting rooms from 2:30-4:15.

2. Lecture: Shipwrecks of Long Island Sound
Free lecture open to the public: Peter Johnson, avocational underwater archaeologist, will present recent research on shipwrecks in Long Island Sound. 1. The Adult Literacy Center At Stony Brook - Needs You!
The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University (SBUALC)is a partnership between the Literacy Volunteers of America-Suffolk County, Inc. and Stony Brook University. The Center is designed to serve the employees, students, their families, stakeholders, and other constituents.
The Adult Literacy Center focuses on the university primary missions of teaching, research, and service. Services include basic literacy tutoring for the low-level reader (below 6th grade) and for those in need of conversational English skills.
The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is in need of volunteers to help individuals within our community learn to read and write and/or speak conversational English. A Tutor Training Workshop will be offered on-campus September 11th - October 30th. 1. 2003 Seawolves Football Season Tickets Now On Sale
Season tickets for the 2003 Stony Brook Seawolves football season are now on sale. Stony Brook will look to extend its undefeated home winning streak inside Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium when it hosts the Siena Saints on Saturday, Sept. 13th at 6:00 p.m. The first 5,000 fans will receive a free Howl Towl. There will also be a post game fireworks display.

3. 2003 Summer Girls Lacrosse Clinic Series
The Seawolves Women's Lacrosse Team is offering 3 Girls Lacrosse Clinics this summer on July 1, July 29, August 13, 2003. SB faculty and staff will receive a $10.00 discount. The Seawolves Girls Lacrosse Clinics are designed specifically for girls and young women who want to take their game to the next level. Staffed by experienced coaches who are familiar with the women's game on the collegiate level, the clinics combine basic and advanced skill instruction, offensive and defensive strategies, and game experiences to help players put it all together. If you are 18-60 years of age and have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), you're invited to participate in a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

3. Select - Selenium And Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial.
SELECT is a research study being conducted to see if prostate cancer can be prevented.
Men who participate in this study will take two capsules a day. Some men will take only selenium or vitamin E and some will take both. Others will take a placebo (sugar capsule).
Participants will visit their local study site twice a year for at least seven years, and no more than twelve years. About 32,000 men will take part in this study.
Men free of prostate cancer who are age 55 or older may be able to take part in this study. African-American men may join at age 50 or older.
Taking part in SELECT may not help you directly. But we hope that the information learned from this study will benefit your sons, grandsons, and future generations.

5. Alzheimer's Disease Trial At SUNY Stony Brook
Study: A Trial of Simvastatin (Zocor) to Slow the Progression of Alzheimer's Disease Sponsored by: NIH through Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study
All eligible participants with mild-moderate AD would remain on their current AD treatments. In addition, they would randomize to receive either simvastatin or placebo

Research Study at the General Clinical Research Center, University Hospital.
If you had PREVIOUS PRETERM labor and you are PREGNANT NOW, you may be eligible for a research study that is looking at different ways to manage stress and cope during pregnancy.
Through this study you may learn relaxation techniques, coping skills and stress reduction techniques. These skills may be useful to you during and after your pregnancy.

3. Welcome Wagon 2003
Volunteer For Welcome Wagon 2003! Sunday, August 31, 2003
The Division of Campus Residences Invites you to be a part of Welcome Wagon 2003
The Welcome Wagon program is designed to welcome the incoming class of first year students who will move onto campus on Sunday, August 31, 2003 between 9 am and 3 pm. Over 300 student volunteers will welcome the first year students, answer their questions, and assist them in moving their belongings into the residence halls.
We are actively seeking the participation of faculty and staff in this effort. In the past, faculty and staff who have volunteered have been particularly helpful in answering questions and providing information to students, parents, and family members.

4. Meet the oncology nurse from the Cancerhelpline
The Oncology nurse from the Cancer Helpline will be available at the Health Resource Center located in the main entrance of the hospital on level 5, every Thursday from 1:00pm-2:00pm during the month of August. This is an opportunity to have cancer questions answered and to obtain cancer related information. For more information call the Cancer Helpline at 1800 862-2215.
