1. 2003 Health Insurance Transfer Period

A recent survey conducted by SBU's Center for Survey Research indicates that 73% of Americans ranked good health care benefits as the most important issue of employment. The State and Research Foundation agree and provide its employees with several excellent health plans and the opportunity each year to transfer from one plan to another.
The Health Insurance Transfer Period begins November 1, 2003. West Campus Human Resource Services/Benefits Section is sponsoring a Transfer Period Health Insurance Day on November 5, 2003 in the SAC, Room 306 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please come and meet with the representatives of the various health plans to ask your questions and ensure that the health plan you have chosen is right for you and your family.

2. UUP and MC employees - Sick Leave Exchange Program (SLEP) has been discontinued for 2004 until further notice.

As the Sick Leave Exchange Program (SLEP) is a negotiated term of the UUP contract that expired this year, until further notice, this program is being discontinued in 2004. If you are currently enrolled in SLEP for 2003, participation will end on December 31.

6. Stony Brook's NCAA Self-Study of SBU Athletics Program - Report Summary Now Available; and Town Hall Meetings Scheduled

The Steering Committee for Stony Brook's first NCAA self-study of our athletics program invites you to review and comment on the summary of findings and recommendations contained in the four subcommittee draft reports. The four subcommittees have been examining these key areas: Academic Integrity; Fiscal Integrity; Governance and Rules Compliance; and Equity, Welfare, and Sportsmanship. The summary is available October 15 through November 21 at www.stonybrook.edu/ncaa. Comments can be submitted online through a form at that site. The summary is also available in alternate format upon request to George Meyer, Chair, NCAA Certification Self-Study Steering Committee at 2-6270.

The Clinical Preventive Medicine Service of the Department of Preventive Medicine will be providing flu vaccination on Tuesday, October 21, 11:00 - 2:00pm in the Student Activity Center Auditorium. 1. Employee Assistance Program Lunchtime Learning - Getting Organized - When Time is Not on Our Side

Getting things done reduces stress, but getting started is a challenge. And, it's all about managing ourselves without feeling overwhelmed. How do we balance work, family, leisure time and other commitments? We will focus on those things that matter most and identify the obstacles in our path. A questionnaire will be distributed so we can evaluate how we spend our time. Topics covered will be: 1) fighting procrastination, 2) managing stress, 3) setting goals and priorities 4) choosing the right model for taking action, and 5) applying the 3 D's - Do it, Delegate it and Defer it.

5. FMLA Workshop for Supervisors & Managers of Research Foundation Employees

This training focuses on the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) specifically for the Research Foundation Employee. The training is recommended for VP Coordinators, Department Heads, Managers and Supervisors who are responsible for administering campus policies.
This workshop is designed to provide participants with a basic understanding of the Family Medical Leave Act, in order to assist them with implementing this Federal Law and employee entitlement. We will review eligibility requirements, employee and employer responsibilities, and the coordination of implementing FMLA with other leave entitlements, such as accrual charging, Short Term Disability and Workers Compensation.

The Learning Communities Program is pleased to present a talk by a speaker from Doctors Without Borders on Wednesday, October 15, during Campus Lifetime, in Javits 110. Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres is an international humanitarian aid organization that provides medical assistance to endangered populations in more than 80 countries. Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Doctors Without Borders has been internationally recognized for their work on health and human rights. All Learning Communities students, staff, and faculty are cordially invited to attend. This event is also open to the entire SBU campus. 3. Select - Selenium And Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial.

SELECT is a research study being conducted to see if prostate cancer can be prevented.
Men who participate in this study will take two capsules a day. Some men will take only selenium or vitamin E and some will take both. Others will take a placebo (sugar capsule).
Participants will visit their local study site twice a year for at least seven years, and no more than twelve years. About 32,000 men will take part in this study.
Men free of prostate cancer who are age 55 or older may be able to take part in this study. African-American men may join at age 50 or older.
Taking part in SELECT may not help you directly. But we hope that the information learned from this study will benefit your sons, grandsons, and future generations.

11. Opportunity To Participate In A Research Study On Autism At The Gcrc, University Hospital. Free IQ Score And MRI Scan

The CODY Center is currently recruiting participants ages 6-18 with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, who are not on medication, to participate in a neuroimaging study.
The children in the study will participate in three sessions, over a time frame of about three to six months, each session lasting about 60 minutes. During the first session and the third session, pictures of the brain will be taken using a device called MRI. There are no contrast or radioactive agents, sedation or other injections required for the study. During the second session the children in the study will meet with a neuropsychologist who will interview them and ask them to perform specific tasks, in order to evaluate their language and thinking process.
