2. Old Library Catalog Is Retired
Beginning December 20, the Library's old STARS catalog(the telnet version with the black screen) will no longer be available.
Bookmarks to this site will not function. All catalog users will now use the new web-based catalog that debuted in the spring, and is available from the Library Home Page (www.stonybrook.edu/library/). The new STARS can be viewed with Windows 95 (or higher) using the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 (or higher) or Netscape 4.7 (or higher) browser.

3. NYS Deferred Compensation Plan Participants - Deduction Error
The administrative service agency for the NYS Deferred Compensation Plan inadvertently cancelled the 2003 deferred compensation deduction for employees who had participated in the Age 50 and Over Catch-Up during 2002 and did not re-elect that option for 2003. The Plan's administrative service agency has taken the necessary steps to restore deductions for the affected employees for the Administration checks dated January 29, 2003. Employee inquiries regarding the impact of this error on their deferred compensation amounts for 2003 should call the Deferred Compensation Plan's HELPLINE at 1-800-422-8463.

Connections is a skill-building program that highlights the importance of customer service and positive communication skills in a campus setting.

8. Defensive Driving Program offered for UUP employees and their immediate family members.
A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Monday and Tuesday, January 27 & 28, 2003 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the SAC Room 304, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members. (Attendance at both classes is required.)
Cost is $25 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 3 pm.

17. Understanding Depression and Its Impact on the Workplace - EAP Supervisory Training January 30, 2003, 9:00-12:00 Women's Studies Colloquial Center
Depression is one of the most common mental health problems and the most treatable. It is a particularly debilitating illness affecting an employee's ability to concentrate, to be productive, to function effectively, and to relate to others. Sleep problems, depressed mood, weight loss or gain and fatigue are some common symptoms. Program objectives are to: Identify the symptoms of depression as they manifest themselves in the workplace; Understand depression as a treatable illness and the importance of early intervention; Role play interventions to support employees seeking help; Recognize the role of EAP in assessment, referral, and transition back to work after treatment.

Adobe Illustrator is the preferred program of designers, graphic artists, technical illustrators and business professionals around the world. Stony Brook is pleased to present its fourth year of our fun-filled, action packed, computer savvy Summer Camp. The Camp combines a unique twist of educational activities and athletics for children between the ages of 5 -12. 31. Men's Basketball Hosts Rival Albany Sunday, Jan. 20 at 4:00 p.m. - Zooperstars Inflated Mascots Will Be On Hand!
The Stony Brook men's basketball team will host bitter America East rival Albany on Sunday, January 19th at 4:00 p.m.
The Zooperstars Inflatable Mascots will be on hand to entertain fans of all ages. The mascots are patterned after zoo animals, but with professional athletes names (Derek Jeter would be Derek Cheetah and would be dressed as a cheetah; Shaquille O'Neil would be Shaquille O'Seal and would be dressed as a seal).There will be four characters on-hand to entertain the fans.

34. Osteoporosis Prevention And Management Series
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine is offering a series of three group visits for the prevention and management of osteoporosis.
Participants will be evaluated individually in order to assess osteoporosis severity.
The groups will also discuss osteoporosis in an integrative, holistic fashion with focus on measures that may be added to conventional treatment such as nutrition with whole foods, supplements, yoga, and exercises to improve hip and spine bone density. Conventional monitoring techniques and medical intervention with hormone replacement therapy and drugs will be covered as well.
The series of three, two-hour sessions will be conducted on Wednesdays, February 5th, 12th and 26th between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park. Most insurance plans are accepted with appropriate co-pay. For those without coverage, the cost for the series is $150.00.

35. Diabetes and Periodontitis
Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes. We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. Study participants will receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment of up to $300.00.

What: * 20 one-to-one sessions. * Unique, state-of-the art treatment developed by experts in the fields of bereavement and trauma. This treatment is being researched and involves completing questionnaires.
Where: The State University of New York at Stony Brook, Pace University, and Columbia University.
Cost: The treatment will be offered free of charge for those who are accepted into the study.

37. Smoking and Periodontal (Gum) Disease
Are You a Smoker? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
65 million people in the United States have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. Smoking is the greatest risk factor for periodontal disease, an often silent disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic, progressive inflammatory condition with no known cure. We are conducting a study to determine whether a tetracycline drug can reduce specific markers of inflammation, which can make it easier to control and treat periodontal disease.
People enrolled in the study will receive: Payment of up to $300.00. Free Dental Cleaning. Free Study Drug.

39. A toothpaste study to evaluate a toothpaste designed to prevent tooth surface staining

The Oral Biology and Pathology Department of the School of Dental Medicine, at Stony Brook University, is undertaking a study to evaluate a new toothpaste for effectiveness in reducing or eliminating the stain from your teeth.
Subjects should be at least 18 years old, in good health and should have basically good teeth, free from cavities and major restorations.

40. Participants needed for weight loss study.
Eligible participants will be enrolled for a free 20-week research-based weight management program. Classes will meet weekly for 20 weeks on either Wednesday or Thursday afternoons (around lunch time) in the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) conference room on 12 floor of the Hospital. The study includes baseline testing and follow-up testing for 1 year after the end of the 20-week program. Participants will be asked to do the following: attend the assigned 20 week weight management program, complete an outpatient physical in December or January, and stay overnight at the GCRC approximately 7 times during the study. Each overnight stay includes: 9 survey forms, resting metabolic rate study, body composition measurements, and blood chemistries. The first overnight stay will be in December or January. Participants must have a BMI > 30 (at least 20 lbs. overweight) and not smoke. Interested people should call Ms. Connolly at 444-8246.

41. Summer 2003 Undergraduate Research Internship Program
The Center for Biotechnology is accepting applications for the Summer 2003 Undergraduate Research Internship Program. Internships will be established within the local biotechnology industry. Students will spend their summers, at a company, learning laboratory techniques and contributing to specific research projects. Students interested in careers in the biotechnology industry would be optimal candidates for selection as trainees under this program. Applicants will be selected from students beginning their junior or senior year who are majoring in any biology or chemistry department. Students in other life sciences departments, with equivalent but not exact qualifications as outlined in the application guidelines, are encouraged to contact Angeline Judex to discuss candidate eligibility. 45. CELT Spring 2003 Mandatory TA Orientation
