On February 25, Stony Brook students, faculty, staff and alumni will journey up to our State Capital for the best road trip of the year. It's Stony Brook Day in Albany, and we want you to come.
You'll get a chance to celebrate Stony Brook - to let your legislators know what the University means to you - and we'll show our State representatives how much their support means to us. You'll have a chance to meet people from all parts of the campus and experience firsthand how our government works.

2. Defensive Driving Program offered for UUP employees and their immediate family members.

A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Monday and Tuesday, January 27 & 28, 2003 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the SAC Room 304, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members. (Attendance at both classes is required.)
Cost is $25 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 3 pm.

4. Old Library Catalog Is Retired

Beginning December 20, the Library's old STARS catalog(the telnet version with the black screen) will no longer be available.
Bookmarks to this site will not function. All catalog users will now use the new web-based catalog that debuted in the spring, and is available from the Library Home Page (www.stonybrook.edu/library/). The new STARS can be viewed with Windows 95 (or higher) using the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 (or higher) or Netscape 4.7 (or higher) browser.

11. Understanding Depression and Its Impact on the Workplace - EAP Supervisory Training

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems and the most treatable. It is a particularly debilitating illness affecting an employee's ability to concentrate, to be productive, to function effectively, and to relate to others. Sleep problems, depressed mood, weight loss or gain and fatigue are some common symptoms. Program objectives are to: Identify the symptoms of depression as they manifest themselves in the workplace; Understand depression as a treatable illness and the importance of early intervention; Role play interventions to support employees seeking help; Recognize the role of EAP in assessment, referral, and transition back to work after treatment.

21. The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook - Needs You!

The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is a partnership between the Literacy Volunteers of America-Suffolk County, Inc.and Stony Brook University. The Center is designed to serve the employees, students, their families, stakeholders, and other constituents.
The Adult Literacy Center focuses on the university primary missions of teaching, research, and service. Services include basic literacy tutoring for the low-level reader (below 6th grade) and for those in need of conversational English skills.
The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is in need of volunteers to help individuals within our community learn to read and write and/or speak conversational English. 29. Osteoporosis Prevention And Management Series

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine is offering a series of three group visits for the prevention and management of osteoporosis.
Participants will be evaluated individually in order to assess osteoporosis severity.
The groups will also discuss osteoporosis in an integrative, holistic fashion with focus on measures that may be added to conventional treatment such as nutrition with whole foods, supplements, yoga, and exercises to improve hip and spine bone density. Conventional monitoring techniques and medical intervention with hormone replacement therapy and drugs will be covered as well.
The series of three, two-hour sessions will be conducted on Wednesdays, February 5th, 12th and 26th between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park.

36. Diabetes and Periodontitis

Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes. We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. Study participants will receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment of up to $300.00.

Are you or is someone you love having difficulty healing from the death of a loved one as a result of the September 11 Catastrophe?
If so, The Sudden Traumatic Loss Individual Treatment Program may be for you.
Who: Persons 18 years of age or older who have lost a spouse, partner, child, parent, sibling, or close friend or coworker as a result of 9/11.
What: * 20 one-to-one sessions. * Unique, state-of-the art treatment developed by experts in the fields of bereavement and trauma. This treatment is being researched and involves completing questionnaires.
Where: The State University of New York at Stony Brook, Pace University, and Columbia University.
Cost: The treatment will be offered free of charge for those who are accepted into the study.

38. Smoking and Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Are You a Smoker? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
65 million people in the United States have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. Smoking is the greatest risk factor for periodontal disease, an often silent disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic, progressive inflammatory condition with no known cure. We are conducting a study to determine whether a tetracycline drug can reduce specific markers of inflammation, which can make it easier to control and treat periodontal disease.
People enrolled in the study will receive: Payment of up to $300.00. Free Dental Cleaning. Free Study Drug.

The Oral Biology and Pathology Department of the School of Dental Medicine, at Stony Brook University, is undertaking a study to evaluate a new toothpaste for effectiveness in reducing or eliminating the stain from your teeth.
Subjects should be at least 18 years old, in good health and should have basically good teeth, free from cavities and major restorations.
Subjects selected may receive up to $250.00 for their participation.

43. Summer 2003 Undergraduate Research Internship Program


The Center for Biotechnology is accepting applications for the Summer 2003 Undergraduate Research Internship Program. Internships will be established within the local biotechnology industry. Students will spend their summers, at a company, learning laboratory techniques and contributing to specific research projects. Students interested in careers in the biotechnology industry would be optimal candidates for selection as trainees under this program. Applicants will be selected from students beginning their junior or senior year who are majoring in any biology or chemistry department. Students in other life sciences departments, with equivalent but not exact qualifications as outlined in the application guidelines, are encouraged to contact Angeline Judex to discuss candidate eligibility. 48. Auditions for University Orchestra at SUNY Stony Brook to be held on Tuesday, January 28

Auditions for students interested in joining the University Orchestra at SUNY Stony Brook will be held on Tuesday, January 28 from 11 to 1 and 2 to 5:30 in room 2342 in the Fine Arts Center. All interested and qualified woodwinds, brass, percussion and string players, both undergraduate and graduate, should attend the first rehearsal on Tuesday, January 28 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. - room 0111 of the Fine Arts Center.
