3. Defensive Driving Program offered for UUP employees and their immediate family members.

A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Saturday, March 8, 2003 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the Stony Brook Union Room 237 for all UUP employees and their immediate family members. Cost is $25.00 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z-3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. 4. Old Library Catalog Is Retired

Beginning December 20, the Library's old STARS catalog(the telnet version with the black screen) will no longer be available.
Bookmarks to this site will not function. All catalog users will now use the new web-based catalog that debuted in the spring, and is available from the Library Home Page (www.stonybrook.edu/library/). The new STARS can be viewed with Windows 95 (or higher) using the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 (or higher) or Netscape 4.7 (or higher) browser.

9. Understanding Depression And Its Impact On The Workplace - Eap Supervisory Training

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems and the most treatable. It is a particularly debilitating illness affecting an employee's ability to concentrate, to be productive, to function effectively, and to relate to others. Sleep problems, depressed mood, weight loss or gain and fatigue are some common symptoms. Program objectives are to: Identify the symptoms of depression as they manifest themselves in the workplace; Understand depression as a treatable illness and the importance of early intervention; Role play interventions to support employees seeking help; Recognize the role of EAP in assessment, referral, and transition back to work after treatment.

Through a series of Action Steps, you'll learn ways to organize your finances and make wise decisions about your financial future. None of the action steps require any prior expertise or experience with money. All that's required is your willingness to (1) set some goals, (2) collect and record information and (3) take one small step after another to accomplish them. The USB Cat Network works to humanely trap, neuter, vaccinate, and care for the many feral cats that live on campus. Currently, we have a small number of young cats caputured on campus that are friendly and available to good homes. 31. Stony Brook January 2003 Emergency Blood Drive

Welcome back from the Holidays and good luck at the start of the new Spring semester! The Long Island Blood Services (LIBS) is not able to collect enough blood due to the ban on the importation of blood from Europe, cold weather and the Holiday Season. LIBS is in desperate need of blood, and the shortage of shipments of blood to local hospitals by 50% is causing surgery cancellations and emergency room closures. LIBS have asked the Stony Brook University Community to help relieve this severe life threatening condition by holding an emergency blood drive. Therefore, Stony Brook University is holding an Emergency Blood Drive on Monday, 27th January 2003 from 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the SAC Auditorium.

32. 5th Annual Institute for Medicine in Contemporary Society Writing Contest Guest Judge: David Watts, MD - Physician and Poet

All members of the SUNY community are welcome to enter, including students, faculty and staff from all departments on both sides of campus, and employees, staff, patients and families of patients of University Hospital.
Entries may take the form of poetry, short stories, or personal essays. Poetry entries should be no longer than fifty lines, and prose no more than 2000 words. There is no limit to the number of entries any one person may submit. Submissions may NOT have been previously published in print or electronic format and must NOT be under consideration for publication anywhere else.
There will be two first prizes of $500 - one for best poetry entry and one for best prose entry.

Dr. Robert Katz, Faculty Author Stony Brook University Hospital will read from his new novel entitled, "Surgical Risk." Dr. Katz' first novel, "Edward Maret," won the ASA Literary Prize for 2001. He is currently working on the sequel to Surgical Risk.
Paul Levinson, author of "The Silk Code," which won the Locus Award for Best Novel of 1999, will read from his latest myth entitled, "The Consciousness Plague." Connie Willis has this to say about The Consciousness Plague, "Forensic detective Phil D'Amato is one of my favorite characters, and the puzzles he solves are always imaginative, ingenious and addictive."
Marc Vun Kannon will be reading from his first fantasy entitled, "Unbinding the Stone." "Remarkably complex and often very funny, definitely original" states Tanya Huff, author of The Better Part of Valor.

37. Osteoporosis Prevention And Management Series

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine is offering a series of three group visits for the prevention and management of osteoporosis.
Participants will be evaluated individually in order to assess osteoporosis severity.
The groups will also discuss osteoporosis in an integrative, holistic fashion with focus on measures that may be added to conventional treatment such as nutrition with whole foods, supplements, yoga, and exercises to improve hip and spine bone density. Conventional monitoring techniques and medical intervention with hormone replacement therapy and drugs will be covered as well.
The series of three, two-hour sessions will be conducted on Wednesdays, February 5th, 12th and 26th between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park.

45. Stony Brook's Outstanding First-Year Advocate Selected

Mary Bernero, Senior Curator in Undergraduate Biology, was recently named Stony Brook's first recipient of the Outstanding First-Year Advocate Award. The award, which is sponsored by the office of Student Orientation Programs, was developed to recognize one USB 101 instructor who exhibits dedication to first-year students, makes significant contributions on behalf of fist-year students in USB 101, and has a positive impact on the experiences of students enrolled in the course. Bernero was nominated for the award by students in her fall 2002 USB 101 class. The nominations from her students helped distinguish her from over 60 other USB 101 instructors.

52. Diabetes and Periodontitis

Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes. We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. If so, The Sudden Traumatic Loss Individual Treatment Program may be for you.
Who: Persons 18 years of age or older who have lost a spouse, partner, child, parent, sibling, or close friend or coworker as a result of 9/11.
What: * 20 one-to-one sessions. * Unique, state-of-the art treatment developed by experts in the fields of bereavement and trauma. This treatment is being researched and involves completing questionnaires.
Where: The State University of New York at Stony Brook, Pace University, and Columbia University.
Cost: The treatment will be offered free of charge for those who are accepted into the study.

54. Smoking and Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Are You a Smoker? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
65 million people in the United States have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. Smoking is the greatest risk factor for periodontal disease, an often silent disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic, progressive inflammatory condition with no known cure. We are conducting a study to determine whether a tetracycline drug can reduce specific markers of inflammation, which can make it easier to control and treat periodontal disease.

57. Study in Psychology Department looking for individuals with depression

Have you been feeling depressed?
While brief periods of feeling "blue" in reaction to life stress are common, major depression includes several of the symptoms below, nearly every day for more than two weeks.
* Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or sleeping too much
* Fatigue or lack of energy
* Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
* Feeling down, sad, or hopeless
* Feeling bad about yourself or feeling you were letting yourself or family down
* Trouble concentrating
If you feel that you may have major depression, you may be eligible for a new non-treatment study being conducted at Stony Brook University that's looking at the relation between brain activity and emotion.
Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 60 and be right handed.

Auditions for students interested in joining the University Orchestra at SUNY Stony Brook will be held on Tuesday, January 28 from 11 to 1 and 2 to 5:30 in room 2342 in the Fine Arts Center.
